Remember, everything you need in order to thrive in your educational goals can be found right here at JSU. Use the rubrics for the class assignments, use the library and ask the librarians for guidance- they are wonderful! Take advantage of all the helpful documents on canvas and the syllabus.

Here are some positive examples from which to learn. Follow the thinking process: TP

1. TP: what am I interested in learning? I want to find 10 articles for my literature review.

2. TP: I am going to go to the library and learn how to access the databases. The library is open 7 days a week! I saw Dr. Linstrum access the databases during her demonstration in class. I know that I will need to use various and several “key words” to gather information. OH YEAH- the textbook has information about using the databases!

3. TP: OK, now I have 3 to 5 articles about my interest area. I can now complete Rough Draft One. I am following the Research Paper Outline Dr. Linstrum provided on Canvas.

4. TP: Here is my first Null Hypothesis: Black men, who have had a below the knee amputation, are NOT able to be employed as an inventory foreman in a manufactory warehouse.

I want my literature review findings to REJECT the null hypothesis. In other words, we know that Black men who have had an amputation CAN work in warehouses.

5. TP: I am currently working with 2 Black men who are getting an updated prosthesis in order to continue working as foremen. One is working in the Houston Shipyards and the other is working using the forklift at the International Airport. What I am going to do to contribute to the knowledge base about people with disabilities is- a. Develop a structured Interview for these two men to answer. Structured Interview: 1. did you experience any obstacles to the physical demands of your job as foreman? If so, please share your experience. 2. Do your co-workers know that you use a prosthesis? If so, please share about what was their reaction? 3. Do you feel safe at your job? 4. What, if any, improvements could be made at your job? 5. Do you ever miss a day of work due to any issues with your prosthesis?

6. TP: Now, with the information I gathered from my two clients, I can add to the knowledge base about people with disabilities and raise awareness about employing people with disabilities. I can follow the Research Paper Outline.

My abstract may change as I gather more information from the 10 articles/references and the after I interview my 2 clients. Abstract is on a page by itself.

Abstract

Research indicated that individuals with disabilities are equally capable of all work demands as individuals without disabilities. Recent research has focused on the intersectionality of people.

Intersectionality includes one’s race, disability, age, culture, religion, education level, sexual orientation, as well as assigned sex (male or female). This study revealed what two Black men who had below the knee amputation, experienced at the work site.

Introduction

Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors continuously work to promote all people with disabilities as capable employees of any and all industries, organizations, and corporations. Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors are aware and advocate for the application of the 2008 Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA). With the amendments, disability is more flexible and broadly interpreted. The purpose of the study is to investigate the struggles Black men who use a below the knee prosthesis may encounter with the physical demands within the job description.

Null Hypothesis: Black men, who have had a below the knee amputation, are NOT able to be employed as an inventory foreman in a manufactory warehouse.

The results of my research (collecting 15 articles/references and my own interview) will reject the null hypothesis. The results of my research will establish that Black men who have had a below the knee amputation, and use a prosthesis, are capable of all work demands in a manufactory warehouse.

Now begin the literature review by summarizing the 10 articles that you found which supports you rejecting the null. There are tons of awesome research that support your interests.

Example:

Reed and Richards (2009) reported that the Frito Lay warehouse in Denver, Colorado, was hiring people who had been out of work due to the recent storms destroying the actual buildings. Twenty people interviewed for 16 job openings. Among the twenty applicants, 5 had a disability. Among those 5, only 2 self-reported that they used a prosthesis. All of the 5 applicants with disabilities were hired. However, the 2 that self-reported their disability were hired for inside the office work. These 2 used computers, maintained databases, ordered and paid for equipment and tools. The other 3 applicants with unreported below the knee amputation, were hired for warehouse work. Because warehouse work is considered dangerous, the 3 men made $10 dollars an hour more than the 2 men working inside the office.

Sanders and Dismuke (2011) followed up with similar research and similar results. The Goodwill Industries in Houston, Texas hired over 100 Black men with disabilities. All 100 were hired for warehouse jobs. Keep reading and summarizing the information you learn from the 10 articles you find.
