. Strategies to Help Bring Your Report to Life

This handout will assist you with your State of the Realm Role Play discussion forum in Week 2 and your Visitor to a Foreign Land discussion forum in Week 4. Consider these strategies to help bring your report to life:

1. Write in the first person (I, me).

2. Become the figure and take on this figure’s perspective, based on your reading of relevant primary sources and your understanding of the broader historical context.

3. Make sure to provide basic details.

• Your name

• Place of residence

• Approximate time period when you are living

• Your social standing

• Gender

• Age

• Marital status

• Anything important not yet covered (approximately one sentence)

4. Where, specifically, are you from, and where, specifically, are you visiting?

• Identify and describe your own society, based on relevant facts to set up a strong sense of context.

• Identify and describe the society you are visiting, based on relevant facts to set up a strong sense of context.

• Are there specific people you meet? What is their status?

5. What is your understanding of the main issues of the time and place you are visiting?

• What precisely is going on that seems worthy of commentary? Why (approximately one sentence)?

• What specific details can you provide as examples to back up your impressions?

6. How does the society you are visiting compare to your “home” society? What details stand out to you as most important? Why?

For this discussion forum activity, you must

  • pick a specific society being studied this week, as found in Chapters 2 and 3 of your textbook or in the LIB101: Week 2 Civilization Tour interactive,

  • assume the role of advisor to a powerful leader in your society,

  • identify two ideals on which society rests and whether these ideals are upheld in practice, and

  • report on at least two topics from the topic options below.

Topic options for your state of the realm report (pick at least two):

  1. Identify two aesthetic and intellectual achievements of your society in the realm of art, architecture, philosophy, theology, literature, sciences, or music.

    • Who creates aesthetic or intellectual works?

    • Who funds the creation of such works?

    • For what purposes are such works created?

    • What ideals are expressed in such works?

  1. Identify two technological achievements of your society.

    • How has your society addressed water supplies?

    • How has your society contended with urban development?

    • How has your society advanced mechanisms for trade or commerce?

  1. Describe the government or system of rule in your society (your understanding of governance, from the point-of-view of your character).

    • Who leads? Upon what basis?

    • Who participates in governance? Upon what basis?

    • What ideals are associated with “good governance” or a “good ruler”?

    • What type of legal system or laws uphold rule? How is justice conceived?

  1. Describe the ethics, values, or religious beliefs present in your society (your understanding of the ethical or belief systems of your society).

    • Is there religious unity or strife between different factions or faiths?

    • How are ethics, values, or religious beliefs expressed by individuals, families, or entire communities?

    • Are there rites or rituals associated with life stages such as birth or death?

    • How do the values you describe impact art, architecture, philosophy, theology, literature, sciences, music, systems of rule, or gender ideals?

  1. Evaluate gender relationships (meaning your understanding of the roles played by men and women—whether they were their actual or just perceived roles).

    • What ideals shape family relationships? Between parents? Parents and children? Siblings? Ancestors? Larger kinship networks?

    • What ideals shape what is considered appropriate or inappropriate sexuality?

    • What ideals shape work?

    • How are gender roles and relationships expressed in other areas of society?

Remember that you are presenting your findings to a powerful person. You must identify social ideals yet be bold enough to note when these ideals fall short or produce unintended negative consequences! Be persuasive by supplying specific examples drawn from course materials or sources produced by your own research to support your positions. Cite and format all sources according to APA Style as outlined in the Writing Center’s Introduction to APALinks to an external site., using both in-text citations and providing full references at the bottom of your post.

The purpose of this self-reflection discussion forum is to provide you with an opportunity to explore topics related to the expression of humanity in works of literature, philosophy, theology, art, architecture, or music that interest you. It is also an opportunity to share insights and questions with your peers that have come to mind and discuss any difficulties you may have faced this week, hopefully to find solutions. Your initial posting should describe your experiences in the course this week that can prompt further discussion.

This is a student-centered space, provided for you to engage openly with your colleagues. Your instructor may monitor this space occasionally, but will usually not post to it. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to contact your instructor directly.

To begin, reflect on what you found interesting, surprising, or confusing about the human condition this week, considering in particular how humanity was impacted by the societal developments in the West and the East. Did you learn anything about past cultural conceptions of humanity that caused you to understand an issue or event differently? Have you discovered any study habits or tips that help you to complete your course work more effectively or efficiently?

In your initial posting, address the following questions:

  • What struck you in particular about the human condition and the expression of humanity as you explored the course materials this week?

  • What insights have you had?

  • What has caused you to struggle or feel confused?

  • What questions have come up for you at this point?

  • Do you have any helpful tips that you have picked up in this course or a past one?
