Problem Set #6
due Sunday, March 24th
Instructions. Watch the lectures for this week’s module covering the related samples one-way ANOVA. Then, respond to each of the questions below by highlighting the correct answer or typing your answer in the corresponding answer box. If a question has multiple parts, be sure to address each. To receive full credit, you must upload a photo showing your work on items that require calculations (i.e., your hand-written steps that led you to your answer). Upload your completed document (and an image of your work) to the appropriate iCollege submission folder. This assignment must be completed individually, without any assistance or collaboration.
For question 1, refer to the paragraph and data below:
Some studies show that people who think they are intoxicated will show signs of intoxication, even if they have not consumed alcohol. To test this, researchers had a group of five adults consume non-alcoholic drinks, which they were told contained alcohol. The participants first completed a simulated, virtual reality standard driving test before drinking. Then, the participants had one nonalcoholic drink and took the driving test again. The participants then had four additional nonalcoholic drinks and took the driving test once more. The number of virtual traffic cones knocked over during each test was recorded. See the data below:
N = 15 G = 23
= 67 | Before drinking | After drinking 1 | After drinking 5 |
Using α (alpha) = 0.05, run through the 4 steps of hypothesis testing and decide whether there are any significant differences among the three groups. 3 points
Null Hypothesis (verbal)
Alternative Hypothesis (verbal)
Critical F value |
Fill out the table: | ||||
Source | SS | df | MS | F |
Between-groups | ||||
Within-groups | ||||
Between-subjects | ||||
Error | ||||
Total |
Make the decision: | Reject the null | or | Fail to reject the null | (highlight your response or delete the other option) |
Is an effect size needed?
Is a post-hoc test needed? |
For question 2, use the information provided to complete the table below. 2.5 points
The following table presents the results from a related samples one-way ANOVA comparing three treatment conditions with the same n= 8 participants exposed to each condition. Fill in the ten missing values.
Hint: Think about the logic of the ANOVA table (i.e., Between-Groups + Within-Groups = Total; Between-Subjects + Error = Within-Groups)
Source | SS | df | MS | F |
Between-groups | 15 | |||
Within-groups | ||||
Between-subjects | 21 | |||
Error | ||||
Total | 93 |
For question 3, refer to the description of results below:
A researcher reports that an intake of junk food among college participants 1 week before, during, and after finals week significantly varied, F (2, 38) = 6.21, p < .05.
How many participants were included in the study? 0.5 points
