Scripts for NEWBORN SCREENING videos

  • How to properly do a heel stick (PCP/hospital)

    • Legibly fill out the card in black ink

    • Including the PCP receiving the results

    • Explain the procedure to parents

    • Use a heel-warming device per manufacturer recommendations

    • Swaddling for comfort

    • Procedure

      • Apply gloves

      • Prepare the heel-stick site with an antiseptic solution

      • Allow antiseptic solution to completely dry

      • Apply mild pressure between your thumb and fingers to hold the baby’s ankle in dorsiflexion. Do not excessively squeeze the baby’s heel.

      • Place the lancing device on outer portion of plantar surface of heel. 

      • Lance the heel.

      • First drop of blood after incision should be wiped away and not used in sample.

      • If blood stops flowing, try to wipe away any clot that may have formed at the incision site with gauze. Release pressure to allow capillary refill, then reapply pressure to allow a blood drop to form again.

      • Fill one circle before moving on to the next being careful not to layer the blood

      • Each circle should be filled through the front and back

    • When sampling is complete, apply pressure to the incision site until bleeding stops. Apply gauze or a bandage.
