Leadership Self-Assessment

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to assist students to analyze their leadership style. Students are encouraged to reflect on the results of the assessment within the context of leadership development and lifelong learning.

Effective leaders know and understand their strengths and weaknesses related to leadership and management. The Authentic Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaire (Walumbwa et al., 2008) is designed to measure authentic leadership by assessing four components of the process: self-awareness, internalized moral perspective, balanced processing, and relational transparency. By comparing scores on each of these components, you can determine your stronger and weaker components in regard to your overall authentic leadership score.

Directions: Each student will complete The Authentic Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaire (Walumbwa et al., 2008) twice during the course; once in Module 1 and again in Module 6.

Module 1: After completing the questionnaire and calculating your authentic leadership score students will submit their scores and a brief reflection as a private journal entry (Critical Reflection Note #1). The Critical Reflection Note (#1) should include your score (total authentic leadership score and scores for each category including self-awareness, internalized moral perspective, balanced processing, and relational transparency) and your thoughts about whether the results accurately represent your perceived strengths and weaknesses related to leadership and management (2-3 sentences). This will be due at the end of the first week of class.

Module 6: Students will complete the questionnaire again and calculate the authentic leadership score. Students will develop a 2-3 page typed reflection of the results addressing each of the following points:

  1. Identify the total score and discuss any change in scores from the last time you took The Authentic Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaire (Module 1). Does it demonstrate growth?

  2. Define your vision of leadership. How do you communicate your vision?

  3. Based on the results of this questionnaire, describe your approach to personal leadership development.

  4. Do these approaches align with the proposed strategies that men or women might use to enhance their effectiveness as leaders?

  5. From the results, discuss how the environment, empowerment, and mentoring influence your leadership development.

General Information: Each reflection should be typed and include a title page with your name, the date, and signed honor code statement. Formatting should adhere to 7th edition APA guidelines. References and citations should be included when needed but are not required.
