Scenario 2 – Personal

Project: Part One: Social Justice

Explanation of Concepts

  • Justice: In this case, justice stands for the fair treatment and respect of individual and groups' rights, such that every person receives what they are entitled to base on his deeds and circumstances (Colquitt & Zipay, 2015). For instance, it can be justice among family members or close friends about their discord because of unsolved issues or various opinions related to recent events.

  • Fairness: Impartiality and equitability mean that decisions are made and resources are shared without favour for any individual or group. In the context of an event such as a holiday celebration, fairness may entail everyone being given a voice and taken seriously, no matter what their beliefs or backgrounds are.

  • Equality: Equality is about giving equal treatment to everyone, regardless of their backgrounds, identities, or circumstances (Minow, 2021). Equality but not always fairness, as individuals could possess different requirements or call for special allowances. Here, equality can be the same chance for everyone to express their views and to take part in the holiday celebration.

Influence of Bias

The conception of social justice here plays a bigger role in the rest of the society with the influence of bias that is present. People's views or understanding of different things can happen due to the things they have learned from their culture, from their personal experiences or received from the media. These biases have the power to create different opinions about impartiality, justice, and equality and affect their kind of feedback during family meetings and discussions about the latest events. What follows is that an opposition can be created to not just see, but permanently reject or even disbelieve the opinions of other people. This can mess up the whole process of social justice battle.

Impact of Different Narratives

Society may come up with a number of narratives that affect the perception of social justice by highlighting certain aspects of events and influencing the cognition of people. Taking media narratives that concentrate on marginalized communities and their viewpoints as a case in point, it is empathy and awareness that are fostered among individuals, making them become advocators of social justice in their circles (Warner, 2020). However, tales that brush aside or neglect the existing systemic inequalities could lead to the propagation of alluring stereotypes and the hindrance of a practical approach to social justice.

Core Principles of Social Justice

In this scenario, the core principles of social justice include:

  • Inclusivity: Making sure that each voice is considered and valued, regardless of the differences in opinions and backgrounds.

  • Respect: Making sure that everyone gets treated with dignity and respect, even if they get into disagreements or conflicts (Hicks, 2018).

  • Empathy: Attempting to comprehend and empathize with the viewpoints of others, especially those born within marginalized or underrepresented communities.

  • Equity: Addressing systemic inequalities and making sure that everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources.

  • Dialogue: Discussing openly and frankly about the problems and looking for mutual understanding and resolution.

By upholding these principles, individuals can foster a more just and equitable environment within their personal relationships and contribute to broader social justice efforts in society.
