Module 1: Awareness Development and Experiential Exercise Instructions

  • Awareness Development: Lay the foundation for cognitive understanding of key concepts of cultural intelligence. Introduce relevant models and readings. Build general knowledge of what culture is and is not, how it influences behavior and world views, and how one can develop the capacity for cultural intelligence.

  • Experiential Exercise Instructions: In this case, you will need to identify a cultural experience that will allow you to exercise your CQ. Because this is such a critical part of the course, you need to think about choosing your experience starting now. This experience must have the following characteristics:

    1. The experience must be NEW. Think of this as a “lab” where you can try out the concepts you are learning in the course in an unknown environment.

    2. The experience must be with an unknown target group and culture. If you choose a group you with which you have had previous contact you will not experience a new and unfamiliar culture.

    3. You should not be in a dominant or power position relative to the target cultural group. Position power can alter the interaction and negate the learning experience.

    4. The experience must allow for meaningful one-on-one contact. It is not sufficient to be a spectator or observer; you must have the opportunity to interact with members of the target culture.

    5. The experience should be at least 2 hours in length. If it is too brief you will not have enough material for reflection.

    6. The experience should not be illegal or place you at unreasonable physical or psychological risk.

    7. You need to be able to provide some evidence of participation such as photos, a contact person, videos, or program bulletin.
