CNL-505 Topic 7: Benchmark - State Credentialing Board Research Project Instructions

Resource: For tips on creating PowerPoint Presentations, you can find tutorials under >Resources > Student Success Center > the Writing Center > Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations.

Directions: The purpose of this project is to become familiar with the credentialing and regulatory processes that govern clinical mental health and school counseling practices. Essentially, there are three sections to the assignment including understanding the role of the board, how to achieve licensure/certification in your state, and the complaint process including common violations and sanctions committed by licensed clinicians and school counselors.

In order to complete this project, you will need to select a state as the basis for your research, preferably where you currently reside or the state where you plan to practice.

Explore the Licensure Requirements, State Certification Requirements, and NBCC – State Board Directory websites in the Topic 6 Resources to find your state governing board.

Information regarding credentialing in the state you have selected can be gathered in one or more of the following ways. (These are options. You are not required to do both.

  1. (Preferred) Reviewing the content of the state credentialing board website.

  2. Attending a public meeting of the state credentialing board and/or review public meeting notes online

Note: Please do not contact the board to get this information as most likely they will not get back to you in time to complete this assignment. In addition, as you will be gathering information about credentialing, it is important you use paraphrasing as well as in-text citations to avoid plagiarism issues.

After you have either reviewed the content of the state credentialing board website or

attended a public meeting of the state credentialing board and/or reviewed public meeting notes online, create a 7-10-slide PowerPoint presentation, in addition to the title and references slides that includes the following:

Part One: Understanding the Role of the Board

  1. Identifying information about the state board (name, location, etc.)

  2. The mission of the state board.

  3. The regulatory authority and scope:

    1. Cite the statutes and rules (names/numbers of the laws and rules) that govern the board’s activities and explain them.

    2. Describe the discipline(s) regulated by the board.

    3. Describe the scope of the board’s authority to regulate professional practice.

  4. The state board/committee structures through which the board performs its functions:

    1. Committee names and responsibilities

    2. Frequency of meetings

    3. Topics included on board/committee agendas

    4. Composition of board and committees

Part Two: How to Achieve Licensure/Certification in Your State

  1. A summary of the licensure and certification requirements for the state in which you plan to practice. Include a comprehensive description of the credentialing/licensure process, for clinical mental health or school counseling.

    1. What is required for certification/licensure?

    2. How many hours of practice/supervision are required for licensure?

    3. What is the paperwork process through the board?

    4. What jurisprudence exam is required?

  2. Differentiate between tiered levels of licensure or certification for professional counselors associate vs. licensed, dependent vs. independent).

Part Three: The Complaint Process Including Common Violations and Sanctions

  1. Provide a description of the complaint process, from the initial receipt of a complaint to its final adjudication, and the typical number of complaints processed per month.

    1. What are some of the infractions committed by licensed counselors and what disciplinary action is taken? (Review the meeting notes to obtain this information).

    2. What is an example of a legal as well as ethical violation?

At least three scholarly sources, one of which should be your state’s licensing board.

A title slide and reference slide are required. Title slide and reference slide are not included in the slide count. Include speaker notes below each content-related slide that represent what would be said if giving the presentation in person. Expand upon the information included in the slide and do not simply restate it. Please ensure the speaker notes include a minimum of 150 words. In-text citations must be included on both the slides and the speaker notes if you have used an outside source in those parts of your PowerPoint Presentation.
