Topic: Does Technology Make Us More Alone?

TITLE: The Impact of Technology on Social Isolation: An Argumentative Analysis

3 step statement

Step 1: Name your topic

I am trying to learn about the impact of technology on social isolation

Step 2: Add an indirect question.

I am studying the impact of technology on social isolation because I want to understand how it affects human behavior.

Step 3: Answer so what? By motivating your question

I am studying the impact of technology on social isolation because I want to understand how it affects human behavior to help my reader understand how it affects an individual's mental health.

What I know about the topic so far is that modern technology's emergence has transformed how humans connect, communicate, and form relationships. We cannot deny the fact that technology helps connect geographical gaps. Nevertheless, there are indications that it increases social isolation and loneliness. Excessive use of technology, such as social media and smartphones, can cause people to feel detached from the real world. According to Henzel and Håkansson (2021), There is a growing body of research indicating that using modern technologies, such as the Internet, video games, smartphones, and social media platforms, has the potential to be addictive. Henzel and Håkansson also stated that social media addiction is not yet an established diagnosis, although it is one of many suggested behavioral addictions (Henzel & Håkansson, 2021).

I want to learn more about technology's psychological and social impacts on human connections and relationships. Specifically, I am interested in understanding the possible contribution of technology to feelings of loneliness and isolation and exploring potential strategies to lessen these harmful effects. Additionally, I want to learn about the role of technology in promoting or hindering meaningful connections and how individuals can mindfully utilize technology to enhance the feeling of being connected and belonging.

Here are some questions I can ask about my topic on the impact of technology on social isolation.

1. What is the percentage of people who reported feeling alone because of overused of social media?

2. Is time spent on digital devices correlated with how lonely people say they are?

3. What is the rate of loneliness between those who frequently use technology compared to those who have minimal exposure?

4. How do different age groups experience social isolation due to technology?

Qualitative Research Questions:

1. How do individuals describe their experiences of loneliness about their use of technology?

2. What common themes emerge in discussions about technology use and feelings of isolation among different age groups?

3. How do people who have taken a digital detox describe changes in their feelings of loneliness and social connectedness?
