Week 3's Content Area

Completion requirements

Why paraphrase, summarize, and quote?

Last week, you learned how to summarize. This week, you will learn two more ways of working with sources: paraphrasing and quoting. Novice writers often use too many quotes, so make sure you avoid this pitfall. Quotes should be used sparingly; they should be avoided if an idea can be easily paraphrased. You should also make sure that you use appropriate signal phrases when summarizing, quoting, and paraphrasing. In APA format, use past or past perfect tense when discussing previous research; use present tense when discussing results and implications of your study.

Another task this week is outlining; you will compose and submit an outline of your paper. Outlining gives you a chance to plan the tentative organization of your paper and determine how you will support your thesis. Since your outline will include sources, please make sure you cite your supporting evidence using in-text citations as well as a list of references in your outline.

Some students do not complete their in-text citations until they have completed writing their paper. This is a mistake as it is impossible to remember which piece of information came from where after you are done writing. A best practice is to cite as you go. If you leave citations until the end of your paper, you risk accidentally plagiarizing.
