Module 3 Assignment

During your review of the Module 3 PowerPoint, record your reflections to the prompts here. Your responses need not be lengthy, but should demonstrate your understanding and/or application of the concepts. Be sure to respond to all listed elements of each prompt. Remember that your overall writing quality is part of your score, so continue to use best practices of grammar, structure, and APA (where necessary).

Name:

Activity A (slide 23)

Review the article by Heinze and colleagues that you saw in Mod2. You will use some of your new skills related to statistical data interpretation here.

  • What is the correlation (the r value) between Staff Relationships and Belonging? (see Table 5)

    • Is this positive/negative and what does that mean in the case of these variables (i.e., interpret it)?

    • Is this a stronger or weaker correlation?

  • Is this a statistically significant correlation? How do you know/how can you tell?

2 points

DESCRIBE THE CORRELATION:

IS IT SIGNIFICANT?:

Activity B (slide 26)

Review the article by Wood et al. (2009) provided with the module and use the critical thinking and evaluating skills in the module.

  • How did the evidence in the article stack up to the criteria of clarity, accuracy, logicalness, objectivity?

  • What information did you see related to attribution and authority?

  • Describe your overall impression and evaluation of this article as an authoritative source.

Note: do not simply list bullet points or phrases here; practice good, clear writing (every assignment is an opportunity for practice and feedback!)

Activity C (slide 28)

Use the article by Heinze from Activity A and the article by Wood from Activity B above.

In the highlighted passage from Heinze, focus on the findings for “empowerment.” Review the findings from the Wood article on responsibility.

  • Write 1-2 sentences that link the common elements of these two studies/findings

  • Be sure that you integrate/synthesize both what is similar and what may be unique, and not simply summarize each article independent of the other (be sure you remember the information from slides 18-20 as you make your statements).

  • You must use appropriate in-text citation for both sources (use your APA skills).

  • You must include a full, correct APA reference entry for both sources.

Activity D (slide 33)

Follow the instructions to conduct literature searches in both Google Scholar and via databases at the MU Library

Reflect on your experience with each search strategy. Be sure you address the issues below (go beyond simply saying if you liked it or not)

  • Was it user-friendly?

  • How relevant were the results to what you expected with that search term?

  • Could you get full access/text of what you needed/wanted?

  • Try it again using a narrower search term (e.g., “youth mentoring”)…any differences?

  • Try it again by using Advanced options such as a narrower date range (e.g., 2010-2021)…any differences?

Note: you’re using the MU library for this exercise, but you’re encouraged to also use the resources of your home institution or other teaching institutions to broaden what’s available to you

Activity E (slide 39)

Follow the instructions in the PowerPoint and review all parts of the evaluating web pages tutorial exercise.

Reflect on your experience:

  • What struck you most about the various criteria?

  • How will you use this information in the future?

  • Other thoughts?
