ARTICLE ANALYSIS & SUMMARY

Due Date: See Syllabus

Points Possible: 20pts

The purpose of this assignment is to lead you through the careful reading of a published research article. This is an essential skill of research consumerism and research translation. Additionally, you will utilize your new skills in APA style and professional writing.

Read the article provided on the Course LMS/website. You may find it helpful to have this assignment document open as you read the article. Alternatively, you may want to read the article through one time in its entirety and then go back to complete the assignment after. Do whatever process works best for you to understand and summarize the information.

Download this document and type your responses directly on it. In your responses:

  • Use APA guidelines (i.e., your responses will be double-spaced, will be written in professional language, and will follow standard rules of spelling, grammar, and punctuation). Any use of reference/citation will follow APA format.

  • Remember: Paraphrasing is always better than using direct quotes, and professional writing is concise and precise (more words does not equal more clarity)

  • Be sure you complete ALL the required items.

Submit this assignment on the Course LMS/website no later than the deadline listed in your syllabus.

FULL APA REFERENCE FOR YOUR ARTICLE

  1. All elements of APA referencing are required, including proper formatting of indents, italics, etc. TIP: You may need to look around the article for all the information you need for the full reference as each journal formats pages a bit differently.

Using complete sentences, respond to the following questions

INTRODUCTION/LITERATURE REVIEW (what is studied and why)

  1. What topic is being studied?

  1. What prior research did the author(s) cite in justifying the study? Provide an example for each of the sub-topics the author reviewed to “build the story” (e.g., if it was a study about parent-youth relationships, they might discuss rules, warmth, and conflict). For each, who did the prior research and (briefly) what did they find? TIP: One key piece of research per sub-topic will be sufficient, remember to use APA when discussing the work of prior authors.

  1. Did this research build upon an existing theory? If so, what was that theory? If not, state this fact. TIP: Theories are named (e.g., “ecological systems theory”) and are used to explain and predict a phenomenon. A proposition, or an expected relationship found in previous research, is not a theory (though it is still helpful information).

  1. What are the hypotheses (for a quantitative study) or research questions (for a qualitative or exploratory study)? This tells us what specifically will be studied and what researchers expect.

  1. Identify the main constructs being studied (i.e., dependent and independent variable(s); they should be mentioned explicitly in the hypotheses or research questions though they may not be labeled as “independent” or “dependent” specifically). How are the main constructs defined/operationalized? What definition is given of each construct?

METHODS (how the study collected data; how constructs were studied; who was studied? how was data analyzed)

  1. What type of study/method does this article describe (i.e., experiment, survey, observational study, field study, etc.)? (how was data collected)

  1. How was each construct measured?

  1. Who was sampled? List sample size and the relevant demographics of the sample: racial/ethnic distribution, age range, marital status, etc. (TIP: you don’t have to list everything, just the most salient)? Were these demographics reasonable given the problem being researched?

  1. How did researchers plan to analyze their data? (it’s okay if you don’t know all the statistical procedures but consider things like if they compared groups to each other or they tested associations between variables)

RESULTS (results of the analysis)

  1. What were the key findings? Did the findings support the stated hypothesis and/or answer the stated research question?

DISCUSSION (results in context of the field/previous research; limitations; implications)

  1. How did the author describe their findings as similar/dissimilar to existing research in the field?

  1. How could these findings be helpful to practitioners working with youth (e.g., youth professionals like you) according to the authors?

  1. What limitations, if any, were noted about this study? That is what caveats should we consider, what may have been left out, what could be improved upon, etc.

  1. What other critical evaluations do you have of the article?

ACADEMIC SUMMARY

15. Taking what you included above, create a 1-2 paragraph academically-written summary of this article. This summary must include appropriate APA in-text citations. TIP: This type of summary is what you would write if required to do an annotated bibliography.
