Advanced Nursing Practice Overview

Distinguish between Advanced Nursing Practice (ANP) and the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN).

ANP and APN are closely related concepts but differ in scope and focus. ANP is a higher level of nursing practice that involves activities such as clinical practice, leadership, research, education, and advocacy. It encompasses the use of higher-order competencies and proficiency in the diagnosis, cure, and management of patients, possibly by embracing advanced techniques. This means that while ANP typically refers to a specific scope of work and role in health care, either as a clinician or a specialist, it can also accommodate work that is not particularly patient-focused or carried out in a strictly clinical setting, such as health care administration or education (Hamric et al., 2013). Therefore, the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is defined as a registered nurse who is licensed and acquired post-graduate clinical practice education and training at the master's or doctoral level to practice in a specialized manner. Some of these roles are Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)as well and Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). APNs can autonomously treat their patients independently, including making diagnoses, prescribing medications, and developing treatment plans. Thus, ANP deals with the overall practice of nursing at an advanced level, whereas APN addresses the individual practitioners working in that capacity.

Briefly define advanced nursing practice and the four roles in advanced practice nursing pertaining to clinical practice, primary care, education, administration, and health information.

ANP refers to complex roles in the nursing profession that require the use of advanced knowledge, clinical skills, and decision-making skills in providing care to people (Hamric et al., 2013). It encompasses organization and management, clinical practice, and education to enhance the delivery of care in health-related organizations. Key values include research utilization, health promotion, and a client-centered and integrated approach to care delivery.

The four roles in advanced practice nursing are:

• Nurse Practitioner (NP): NPs practice independently and are able to treat as well as diagnose acute and chronic medical illnesses, prescribe medications, and engage in disease prevention and health promotion.

• Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS): CNSs possess specialized knowledge in particular areas of nursing, delivering detailed and technical patient care, sharing their expertise with the team and teaching staff, and enforcing best practices that will result in enhanced patient care (Hamric et al., 2013).

• Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM): CNMs are primary care providers for women, providing services including prenatal and postpartum care, birth, and gynecological exams using an integrated, woman-centered approach.

• Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA): CRNAs are accountable for providing anesthesia for surgeries and other interventions, regulating patients during and after the administration of anesthesia, and offering pain management services; these professionals may work in clinical and managerial capacities (Hamric et al., 2013).

Discuss the role you intend to acquire through SUO. Include experiences and/or qualities you have that have influenced your decision. Include your personal philosophy.

Through South University Online (SUO), I intend to specialize as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with a focus on mental health. My decision stems from a deep interest in addressing the growing mental health crisis and a desire to provide comprehensive, holistic care to patients. During my nursing career, I have witnessed the impact of mental health issues on families and individuals, which inspired me to take a more active role in addressing both physical and mental health needs. I am drawn to mental health because I believe in the importance of treating the whole person, not just their physical symptoms. Qualities like empathy, patience, and strong communication have always guided my practice, and I feel these are essential for working with individuals struggling with mental health challenges (Hamric et al., 2013). My personal philosophy centers on providing compassionate care that empowers patients to take control of their health. I believe in creating a safe, supportive environment where patients feel heard and valued. As an FNP specializing in mental health, my goal is to bridge the gap between physical and mental healthcare, improving patient outcomes and overall well-being through integrated care.

Develop a minimum of ten questions that you would like to ask the advanced practice clinician or non-clinician you have chosen to interview. Identify in the paper the individual by name, credentials, position, and your planned date for the interview.

• What led you to choose your specific role as an Advanced Practice Nurse?

• How do you stay current with the latest advancements in healthcare and nursing practice?

• What challenges did you face during your transition from RN to APN, and how did you overcome them?

• Can you describe your typical day-to-day responsibilities in your current role?

• How do you manage time and divide your efforts between being a clinician with other responsibilities, such as administration or education?

• How do you approach complex cases that require interdisciplinary collaboration?

• Can you share a situation where your role as an APN significantly impacted a patient's outcome?

• How do you achieve work-life balance in this highly competitive position?

• How do you see the future of APNs evolving over the next decade?

• What advice would you give to a nursing student aspiring to become an Advanced Practice Nurse?

The individual I plan to interview is Taylor Stevens, DNP, FNP-BC, a Family Nurse Practitioner at XYZ Medical Clinic. The planned interview date is September 26, 2024.
