  1. Learning Strategies

  • The textbook stresses the importance of being aware of the impression that we make on others. In fact, it is critically important to remember that your social media presence can set a precedent for you before someone even makes your acquaintance. What does your social media presence reveal about you? Google yourself. What do you see? What would a potential employer think if he or she did the same? How could your social media presence today impact your future career opportunities?

  • Respond to Juston

When social media was first discovered, it allowed people to have avenue to reach out and network between friends and family. I once had a Facebook account, and it was nice for a little while. It quickly became a life measuring platform that turned extremely political. After it became more than just friends and family, I decided that this particular platform for social media was no longer for me. However, I do still have my LinkedIn account that I use primarily for work. The downside to turning off social media is that you no longer know what is going on in your community like you did when you were still connected to social media. So many people and companies promote solely on these platforms you tend to miss certain festivities.

I do believe what you post on social media undoubtedly has the ability to keep you from reaching certain jobs. Unfortunately, your personal views, especially political views these days is a fast way to enter a debate you may or may not be looking for. This is one of the many reasons I stepped away from social media and one of the reasons I enjoy LinkedIn.

I goggled myself and because I have a name so close to Justin Tucker (NFL Baltimore Ravens kicker) that is almost all that comes up. There were a few additional sites that asked me to put information in and it would look my name up, however, I do not trust these sites, so I usually do not entertain adding my personal information in them.

  1. Strategic Entrepreneurialship

  • If you were opening a new venture, would you rather receive debt funding or equity funding? What are your reasons for selecting this type of funding? What are your reasons for not selecting the other type of funding?

  • Respond to Carmina

If I were to open a new venture, I would rather receive equity funding. Equity funding is defined as someone who invests money into your new venture in return for an equity stake in the venture (Blundel, Lockett, & Wang, 2017). Selecting equity funding is best if the right angel investor is found. An angel investor with experience and resources, similar to what the show “Shark Tank.” The benefit for the entrepreneurs is that more significant funds are needed to fund the new venture, possibly a win for all parties involved.

The primary reason for not selecting debt funding is a personal experience I loaned to family members, as well as the required collateral and current interest payment. In my personal experience, I loaded 30K to family members for their entrepreneurial venture. Luckily, their venture is a success to this day, and I was paid in full. The negative aspect is that all of the agreements were done verbally, and nothing was written in legal documents; therefore, problems often arise because of the disagreements between who is the “majority owner,” the entrepreneur with the initial idea, or the one who is doing the labor. The need to provide collateral for bank loans can put any entrepreneur in a worse state than when they started, and perhaps it is taking years to make a profit and support their family.

  1. Health Information Technology & Systems

  • Telehealth is a growing part of health care. How do you see this service being used in the future? What settings are using telehealth more frequently? Share an interesting fact you find about telehealth services. Why did you find this interesting?

  • Response to Kiyomi

Telehealth is expected to continue to be used soon, and it may even become the standard of care. In a few years, patients will have more options for virtual care, increased access to care, improved patient outcomes, reduced financial stress, and smaller devices for monitoring A1. Video-based telehealth services are used more frequently than audio-only sources. One interesting fact about telehealth is that it can include family members. Now, you can authorize a family member to participate in a virtual visit with your doctor. I find this interesting because it makes the patients feel more comfortable when they are allowed to see the doctor with them. The patient can feel more relaxed, and their family can help with any questions, concerns, and research of the patient.

  • Explain how the hypothalamus of the brain and the autonomic nervous system allow us to fight or flee in a stressful situation. Discuss a situation in which you may have had a fight or flight experience.

  • Response to Makia

When you’re feeling threatened and for some, anxious, nervous, and overstimulated different parts of your brain communicate with each other and then a chain reaction happens. The amygdala sends a signal to the hypothalamus. Then the hypothalamus activates the sympathetic nervous system by sending signals through the autonomic nerves. We get the we’re not safe figure out a way to get us out of this even if it comes down to fighting.

When people experience traumatizing events over and over, they can get stuck in the fight or flight cycle. The body never forgets. I unfortunately feel like I’m stuck in a constant fight or flight cycle. A lot of things that bother me don’t bother others and everything feels urgent and serious when it comes to me.

  1. Professionalism in the Workplace

  • Do you believe that technology makes communication easier or more challenging? Explain your response.

  • Response to Bristi

I believe technology makes communication easier. Working at a technology company we strive to help clients (cities, counties, and federal agencies) give their community access to what is going on. We help them give citizens access to handle business easier and to communicate what is needed in their area.As much as I enjoy technology though I do see that there are challenges with this open communication especially with citizens have issues that the municipalities can't handle because it is out of their control. This can cause a lot of internal issues and outlandish problems.

  1. Macroeconomics

  • Why does investment vary more than consumption from year to year?

  • Response to Reed

Investment tends to fluctuate more than consumption from year to year for several reasons. Firstly, the nature of investment is inherently more volatile. When businesses invest, they're spending on capital goods that will help them produce goods and services in the future. This kind of spending can be heavily influenced by the state of the economy and business expectations. For example, during economic downturns, companies often hold back on new projects, leading to sharp declines in investment. Another key factor is that investment is much more sensitive to economic cycles. When the economy is booming, businesses are eager to expand and invest in new technologies, which drives investment levels up. Conversely, during recessions, companies tend to be cautious and may cut back significantly on investments. On the other hand, consumption usually remains more stable because people need to buy food, pay for housing, and cover basic life expenses regardless of the state of the economy, so consumption doesn’t swing as wildly. Additionally, the availability of financing plays a big role. Investment often relies on loans and credit utilization. When the economy is shaky, businesses struggle to secure funding, which can lead to a decrease in investment. In contrast, consumption is more directly tied to people's current income, making it less affected by credit conditions. In summary, the combination of investment's volatile nature, its responsiveness to economic cycles, and the role of financing all contribute to investment varying more than consumption does.

  1. Principles of Accounting

  • Identify a specific tool or technique from those identified in Chapter 19, and discuss how the tool is used in your current or former place of employment.

  • Response to Jared

In my current career (transportation), data analytics is without question one of, If not the most utilized resource within the company and industry. It provides pertinent information for a variety of departments ton include safety and compliance, accounting, recruiting, maintenance, etc. It allows maintenance the ability of enhancing their program by predicting the useful life of parts and equipment, safety to predict driver behavior and build safety programs to decrease the chances of a major accident/incident, compliance the ability to keep the fleet and company compliant with state and federal regulations, recruiting the ability to track average workload and predict needs of driver workforce, and accounting the ability to track payroll whether it be hourly or pay by mile. It also is used to track life expectancy of equipment on an “hours” or “miles” basis, fleet fuel efficiency, account for tax/toll, streamline shipping lanes, and the list goes on. The data analytics provided by the fleet of equipment is an integral part of virtually every department within the company.

  1. Ethics

  • Part I: Can terrorism or torture be justified under certain circumstances? Why or why not? Give an example to support your position and identify and define the moral theory applied in your response.

Part II: Should any means necessary be employed during the course of war? Why, or why not? Discuss your answer, being sure to specifically address the principle of double effect and just war criteria.

  • Response to Mark

This was an interesting topic that I have had to really think about. I would have to say it depends on the circumstances like most have mentioned. Under the utilitarianism moral theory, which maximizes the well-being of individuals, it may be necessary to justify terrorism and/or torture. If someone involved in hurting large amounts of civilians, knows the location of the leader causing the death of citizens, then I could see some level of justification to why torture may be used. However, after reading about moral nihilism, I cannot just boldly say there are no moral rules in war, I think terrorism and torture is morally wrong but I it may have to occurred.

Another one I have pondered for a while. Should any means necessary be employed during a way? The doctrine of double effect if you do something morally good but it has a morally bad side effect, it could be okay. So, if you had to bomb a village of mostly terrorists, but some civilians died; however, with the terrorists gone there was no longer hundreds of attacks world side. I think those means would be necessary even though there was morally bad side effect. With the just war concept, there are some reasons/rules for follow for going to war. Some are that the conflict is carried out with good intentions, as I provided above. Or it may be a last resort when all else has failed. So I think over time, any means may be employed during war but with reason.

  1. English

  • Part I: Throughout this unit, we have discussed ways that illustrations can help to convey a point or to exemplify an idea that a writer is trying to communicate. No doubt, you find yourself in situations all the time in which you must use illustrations. Think about a time when you conveyed a point to someone—a friend, relative, coworker, or colleague—and used an exceptionally apt illustration to drive home a point. You can also write about a time when someone provided you with an enlightening example that crystalized an idea for you. You might also choose to write about how you use illustrations in your daily life.

Do you use illustrations to teach others? How have you used examples to win an argument, teach your child a difficult lesson, or to explain a problem? In what ways are illustrations a part of your daily interactions with others?

Part II: An illustration essay operates on the principle that an argument must be supported with illustrations in order to be effective. Though you will not write an extended illustration essay in this course, it is important to understand how illustrations function to support a point and how to effectively use illustrations in your writing. Write a paragraph to support one of the following prompts; use formal academic tone and at least two specific illustrations to help support the prompt. If you use any source materials for information, be sure to cite appropriately!

  • People should consider adopting shelter or rescue pets instead of purchasing expensive breeds.

  • All people over 18 years old should vote.

  • New York City, NY, is a great place to vacation for people of all ages.

  • Simone Biles is one of the world’s greatest athletes.

  • Lebron James is or is not the greatest basketball player of all time.

  • Dolly Parton is one of the greatest country musicians of all time.

  • The age to legally purchase tobacco products should be raised to 21 years old.

  • Respond to Ryan

Illustrations are heavily utilized in my line of work. As a firefighter, illustrations can help break down a topic that may seem complicated, but through graphic exemplification, can simplify something to be much easier to understand. New firemen have likely never experienced a working fire and haven't been educated in the ability to recognize the signs of rapidly changing fire conditions or impending dangers. The application of illustrations will give the new fireman the ability to visualize the signs of imminent hazards like flashovers, backdrafts, or dangerous flowpaths. By the use of illustrations and describing previous near death events, these new fireman will be able to associate these visuals with real life situations that will hopefully give them the ability to react and perform when need be.

Having only been a charge paramedic for just over a year, I personally use illustrations often when helping to teach paramedic students. "Medical talk" can be very confusing and difficult to interpret at times. My goal when teaching is to create illustrations that can help with retention of information. For example, I get calls for a "breathing problem" almost every shift. I am most often able to decide on my treatment choice based on the patient's lung sounds, medical history, and vital signs. But, I am commonly met with the same question from students; "what is happening in the lungs"?. It is sometimes hard to distinguish between whether or not an individual is suffering from an asthma related event, CHF episode, COPD exacerbation, etc. I use illustrations for clarification purposes to show what is happening within the lungs. It is crucial to understand the differences as an incorrect treatment choice can become fatal for the patient. Illustrations keeps students engaged and help to emphasize the key points without there being too much distracting information.

People should consider adopting shelter or rescue pets instead of purchasing expensive breeds. Adopting an animal in need is such a rewarding experience. You are giving a helpless animal a second chance at a wonderful life with a family. Many shelters are often times forced to euthanize animals due to overpopulation and lack of adoptions while humans are spending thousands of dollars on popular breeds. It is extremely cost effective to adopt as you typically only have to pay the adoption fee while also saving additional expenses as these animals are commonly already vaccinated, sprayed or neutered, and at times, microchipped. While some are adamant on the idea of going with expensive breeds, it is highly recommended to at least take a look at the local animal shelter prior to doing so. Your pet preferences are likely to be met due to the wide variety of animals yet to be adopted. Next time you are considering adding a furry member to the family, consider adopting as the results may just surprise you.

  • Response to Ma’Khyla

I believe social media has become a big part of a lot of people's lives from being able to vent, post daily activities & even being a job. I have personally never really been a big social media person. So, my social media reveals that I am a private person and a business owner. You would not see anything pertaining to my life outside of business because I have always known who I wanted to be and where I wanted to go in life, so I just always remind myself that I am going to be important someday. Once I put my name into google search my Facebook page, Instagram and Pinterest comes up but when I click images a side profile comes up and Pinterest board of forensics science pictures display.

A potential employer would think I am dedicated to what I want in life because so many things of my future career display and my business platform. My social media presence would not impact my future career at all, they would only discover that I am a very business driven person.

  1. Managing Complex Projects

  • What do you believe to be the most common reason for why some risks are not identified in projects? Why is that? As part of your discussion, include a situation in your place of work or daily life where a serious incident occurred that was related to a risk that escaped notice.

  • Respond to Ashley

I think the most common reason why some risks are not identified in projects are incomplete or inadequate risk identification processes. In my experience this happens most often when there is a lack of experience or knowledge. If there isn’t a team-member versed in specific area of the project, risks can be easily overlooked. This also happens with lack of communication, on the other side of the spectrum, if you do have well versed teammates in specific areas, they might not share their insights to risk, or the team makes the mistake of not consulting those who would be able to spot the risks.

A few years ago, my company was implementing a new system that would help identify and retain information on candidates that have applied to open positions. While the implementation of the new system seemed to be going well, the team didn’t look into how the new system would work with the current system well enough. During implementation, external systems started failing, resulting in systems being affected causing major delays across several departments including human resources and onboarding. We ended up having to revert back to "the old" way for a few weeks until the bugs were worked out. To prevent risks from going unnoticed, project teams need to engage in thorough, comprehensive risk identification processes from the start to the the finish.
