Business Case: PROJEX – Employee Engagement and Job Stress

Overview: The objective of this task is to demonstrate your understanding of key organisational behaviour concepts by applying them to a real-world business case. Using a business case you are required to ident 1

PROJEX is a project management company based in Australia with offices in Melbourne and Sydney, employing approximately 400 workers. The company specialises in planning and organising resources for businesses across various industries, managing both ongoing contracts and one-time projects. Recently, the CEO has become increasingly concerned about the declining levels of employee engagement and rising job stress among the staff, which are perceived to be negatively impacting productivity.

The CEO noticed that despite the company's consistent performance in securing new contracts, internal productivity and project completion rates have declined over the past six months since returning to work fulltime in the office. During the pandemic employees had more flexible hours and were able to work from home. The company decided that all workers should return to working fulltime in the offices. A recent employee engagement survey shows a growing sense of disengagement, particularly among project managers and consultants. Absenteeism has risen, and several key employees have reported feeling overwhelmed due to the demands of juggling multiple projects and tight deadlines. The CEO believes that this increase in job stress is leading to reduced performance, collaboration issues, and declining engagement.

The CEO recently read a report by Lockton highlighting the stagnation of employee engagement globally and its adverse effects on company productivity: https://global.lockton.com/gb/en/news-insights/employee-engagement-has-stalled-and-thats-a-problem. Inspired by the article, the CEO is eager to explore how employee engagement and job stress are connected and how addressing these issues could boost productivity and engagement at PROJEX.

The CEO has requested a thorough analysis of the situation, examining how employee engagement and job stress are interrelated, and how strategies drawn from organisational behaviour academic literature can be applied to improve the situation.

Business Case: SYNERGY SOLUTIONS – Personality and Leadership

Overview:

Synergy Solutions is an IT consulting firm based in Brisbane, Australia, with additional offices in Melbourne and Perth. The company employs around 250 staff and provides technology solutions to a wide range of clients. Recently, the CEO, David Smith, has noticed increasing issues related to leadership and employee job satisfaction. Feedback from staff surveys and informal conversations suggests that the issues stem from the leadership style of one of the senior managers, Sarah Mitchell, who leads a key department. The objective of this task is to demonstrate your understanding of key organisational behaviour concepts by applying them to a real-world business case. Sarah is a highly skilled and experienced manager who has been instrumental in driving several successful projects. However, her domineering leadership style has created tension within her team. Reports from employees suggest that Sarah tends to micromanage and is resistant to input from her team, leaving employees feeling undervalued and disengaged. Her approach to leadership has led to increased stress levels, reduced job satisfaction, and higher turnover rates within her department.

David is aware of Sarah's contributions to the company’s success but is concerned about how her leadership style is affecting the wider organisational culture. He recently read several articles on the impact of leadership personality on employee well-being and company culture.

(Note. You should only focus on one personality model/theory not both)

David wants to understand how personality traits of leaders influence employee job satisfaction and overall organisational culture. He believes that addressing these issues could improve team morale and job satisfaction across the company.

The CEO has requested a thorough analysis of how leadership and personality are influencing employee attitudes and performance, with a focus on finding strategies to improve the leadership dynamics within the organisation.
