  • Respond to Lataja

Hi! My name is Lataja and I am an entrepreneur/homemaker. I have been an entrepreneur for 5 years. I run a small soap making business. My husband and I have 3 small children under the age of 6. I currently live in North Alabama (Roll Tide). We lived in Pensacola for around 4 years which was fun to be close to the beach.

This class will give me more insight on how to run my business and learn more about the different aspects of business in general. I initially started college right out of high school, however, life happened. I am currently working towards my BS in Accounting and have about 3 years until I graduate. My goal is to obtain my CPA and go from there.

  1. Org. Communication

  • Andrew Fastow, the former chief financial officer (CFO) of Enron who was convicted of wire and securities fraud, explains that the culture of an organization starts with the behavior of the top executives. Employees do not follow empty rhetoric though: Employees imitate the behavior and decision-making processes of top management (Useem, 2016). Based on what you have learned in this unit, do you believe this is an accurate statement? How big of an effect can empty rhetoric have on organizational behavior?

  • Response to Juan

My name is Juan Fernandez Carreras, and I am 30 years old. I was born and

raised in Puerto Rico, and I currently reside with my family of five, which includes my spouse, our 5-year-old son and two dogs! I am currently serving in the United States Coast Guard as a Yeoman Second Class Petty Officer. My time in the Coast Guard has provided me with not only professional experience but also the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the country, allowing us to witness and appreciate the diverse culture and landscape that our country has to offer. In my current role, I am responsible for a range of financial tasks that are vital to the operations of our unit. This includes overseeing financial approvals for members’ international travel, managing purchase requests for mission-required supplies, and ensuring accountability of unit funds in accordance with Coast Guard Policy. My experience in these areas has allowed me to develop an understanding of financial management, budgeting, and compliance-skills that I know will be valuable as I embark on our long-term goal. As a family, we have set our sights on starting our own business. We believe that the best way to approach this goal is to first gain a comprehensive understanding of the foundational principles of business. By educating ourselves on the essentials of business creation, we hope to not only achieve financial independence but also build something meaningful that aligns with our values and passions. I interested in this course because I now this class will provide us with the necessary tools and knowledge to successfully navigate the early stages of business creation. I am eager to apply what I will learn in this class to both personal goals and professional endeavors. I am excited to begin this new chapter, and I am confident that the skills and strategies I will learn through this course will serve as a solid foundation for the future success of our business. Thank you!

  1. Critical Thinking

  • Chapter 1 of our textbook explains the difference between an argument and an assertion. Give your own example of an assertion. Our textbook author states that assertions do "...little other than impart information." Why do you think assertions should be true? In other words, why does truth matter?

  • Respond to William

Hello!

My name is Bill Gottke, I am currently a full time firefighter/paramedic in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. I have been a career firefighter for 17 years and 23 years including my volunteer days. My current goals are to grow an associates degree into a bachelor’s degree with intents to apply for P.A school at some point later in my career.

The difference between an argument and an assertion is that an argument is trying to group statements together with a conclusion to sway a certain audience into their belief. Whereas an assertion is a supporting single line argument that the speaker is stating a fact or a belief. An example of an assertion would be "water is wet". This assertion should be true to build comradery between individuals to grow trust.

  1. General Psychology

  • Researchers try to use a sample of the population that is truly representative of the people in whom they are interested—one of the main reasons for using random selection. Even so, the sample is usually selected from within a particular segment of the social world in which the researchers themselves live and work.

  • Respond to Carl

Greetings all. My name is Carl Van Nest. I am in the second term of my Sophomore year. I'm currently working towards my B.S. in EMS Administration for two reasons. First, I want to further my career and education, and second, I want to teach my daughter that it is never too late to go back to school, as I joined the military out of high school and never went to college. So, here I am, working towards my first degree while trying to be a good role model. I currently work in Tampa, Florida, with a new hospital-based ground transport ambulance service and am in charge of this new division's education and orientation process. I have been in EMS for 17 years, mainly in Maine, working for hospital-based and municipality services.

When conducting surveys, depending on the topic, you need to be able to compare the regions alike so there isn't a significant "gap" between them. Coming from a small town in Maine to a city the size of Tampa, you bring many differences. Income and education levels are two of the most significant differences. Then, there's also the potential outreach issue of distributing the poll. Everyone seems connected in city life; however, in the country, some still live off the grid. To minimize the impacts, the psychologist would need to do their homework on the area to ensure the specific needs of that region are met to get the best data flow back. As I have heard many times, just get to know your audience. How do you reach them? Describe your study so they understand it appropriately. It may entail extra work for the psychologist. However, this is what will get you the best unscrewed results.

  1. Pathophysiology

  • Welcome to a new term! Please take a moment to introduce yourself to others in the class. Consider sharing any of the following in your introduction:

Where you are from--MS

2Your employment industry—Health field

How long you have been in the field-- 2 years

Your future goals—To open my own healthcare facility for the young and disabled

What you hope to gain from completing this class

Your travel experiences or aspirations

Your degree program and how much longer you have until graduation business. 2 years left

For example, in the United States there are some fairly distinct differences

between people from the Northeast and people from the Southeast, and the

same can be true in many other countries. There are also differences between

large city populations and populations living in the countryside.

If a psychologist is conducting a study in a particular geographical area of a

country, how might regional differences impact the study's results? What

measures could or should the psychologist take to minimize the impact?

  • Respond to Lisa

Hello, my name is Lisa Benner and I currently live in Columbus, Ohio. I am currently employed for the State of Ohio in EMS Investigations. At the age of 60 I moved to Columbus to live and start a new job so that I could be close to my children and grand children. I went from a town of 10,000 to 917,811-1,727.000 people!!! CRAZY! Prior to the big move, I worked in a hospital for 23+ years. I am working towards a degree in medical coding, so that hopefully someday I can work from home and not have to drive in the craziness. I hope to gain more knowledge from this course! The human body has always fascinated me and if I was not so old I would make a major career move! My main focus is my family and spending as much time with my grand children as possible. I do love to travel and see new places and admire God's beauty. I am more of a warm weather lady and love the beach! Alaska is on my bucket list though!

  1. Reimbursement Methodolgies

  • Do you have any experience with medical reimbursement? What are you hoping to gain from this course?

  • Respond to Virgina

Part 1: Hello! My name is Virginia Auxier and I currently live in Nicholasville KY. I am currently employed at Lexington Housing Authority in Lexington, KY. I love my job, but like most, I have a family and being away from home and not being there for a lot of events at school because of work is not the ideal situation. I am pursuing a career in Medical Billing and Coding. My goal is to find something where I can work remotely from home.

Part 2: I do not have any experience with medical reimbursement. I was enrolled in the course because it is a required course for my degree. However, I do look forward to learning about the reimbursement process.

  1. Computer Essentials

  • We all use a computing device whether it is a desktop, a notebook, a tablet, a mobile phone, or some other computing device.

Choose one of your computing devices and discuss why you decided to purchase it. Include a discussion of the research about the device, amount of RAM, CPU power, video graphics, and other functionalities that helped form your purchasing decision. List and discuss five features that you use most often on the device and describe one reason why the device makes life easier for you and one reason it may not.

  • Response to Glenda

Hello. My name is Glenda Brooks. I currently live in Vicksburg, Mississippi. I am an IT Specialist for the Army Corp of Engineers. I recently transferred to the Acquisitions office, where I work with software contracts. Before transferring, I was a PC Support Specialist, doing break-fix work. My goal is to obtain my bachelor’s degree in science.

Part II: I currently use an older model MAC Book Pro I purchased in 2015. Before making this purchase, I researched the lifespan of MAC books. For what I use laptops for, that was the most important thing to me, as it seemed like I was purchasing a new laptop every three years. I also like the graphics and speed of my MacBook, which came with a 2.9GHZ dual-core processor.

I use five main features on my laptop. I love the Facetime feature. I don’t always have to use my phone for Facetime. I use iMessaging a lot. I can respond to text messages without having my phone nearby. I like that I can save my photos to my MacBook without having to keep them on my phone or iPad. I’m also able to edit Adobe files and text them and not always have to send a e-mail. I’ve downloaded Microsoft Office on my laptop so I can write papers and create Excel sheets. Having all Apple products makes using a MacBook easy.

  1. Intercultural Management

  • Discuss the following concept: the disappearance of cultural stereotypes and the reality of subcultures. What are your personal experiences with the existence of stereotypes? For example, Texans raised in the Rio Grande Valley do not have the same cultural values as a New Yorker.

  • Respond to E’Leisha

Hello, My name is E'Leshia Duncan, and I live in Baton Rouge, La. I currently work in a Nursing Home where I live, and my future goals is to own my own Daycare Center in my hometown.

The disappearance of cultural stereotypes and the reality of subcultures is a complex issue. Stereotypes can be oversimplified and wrong of a culture while subcultures demonstrate the diversity of a large group. For example, Texans raised in the Rio Grande Valley do not have the same cultural values as New Yorker by being a single country there can be significant cultural variations.

  1. Management Applications in Accounting

  • Now that the difference between financial and managerial accounting has been established, do you think both types of accounting are necessary to make strategic business decisions? Why, or why not?

  • Respond to Richard

Part 1: Hello everyone. I’m Richard Seyler, but I go by Rich. I am 38 years old, married, and the father to a crazy 3-year-old girl. I am an active-duty Air Force Officer stationed in very cold and windy Minot, North Dakota. In the future, I would like to become an instructor for Air Force ROTC.

Part 2: I do believe that both types of accounting play a key role when making business decisions. Managerial accounting is more internally focused and can contain more than simply monetary numbers such as quantities of items or employees (Jiambalvo, 2020). Financial accounting is considered to be more externally focused and normally uses standard excepted practices of accounting (Jiambalvo, 2020).

When making strategic business decisions, a company must consider the project's impact by reviewing managerial accounting. They can apply principles of financial accounting to see how it may affect the way the company is viewed externally or by shareholders.

Companies need to continue monitoring project costs and be ready to cancel or shut down projects if they are having too great an impact on the overall business. A great example of this is when Meta (Facebook) decided to stop building out its virtual reality construct, “the Metaverse,” due to the high cost and low demand for the product.

  1. Human Resource Management

  • Equal employment opportunity and subsequent discrimination are major factors in today’s workplace. For a quick review, you can access the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's Discrimination by Type webpage to review discrimination by type.

Considering the many types of employment discrimination, share which discrimination law you believe is the most important. Explain your rationale.

Initial post to be a minimum of 500 words and at least one supporting reference. Posts to others should be a minimum of 250 words. You should also include at least two references.

  • Respond to Francis

While there are many important discrimination laws in the United States, I believe the most important is the law against sexual harassment. Unfortunately in today's workforce, there are still many complaints and instances of sexual harassment in the workplace. Employees should not have to show up at work and worry about advances from other coworkers or supervisors leading to a hostile work environment. In the many different jobs I have worked, there has always been at least one sexual harassment issue that has occurred and jobs have been lost or individuals have been demoted because of it. Sexual harassment does not discriminate and it can effect any individual regardless of their gender. The harassment also can involve remarks about a person's sex, requests for sexual favors, and either verbal or physical harassment of sexual nature (US EEOC, n.d.). This law is broad and covers a wide variety or instances where sexual harassment can be interpreted by the victim. This law doesn't prohibit simple teasing, comments that can be seen as offhand, or non-serious incidents, but if they are frequently done or severe enough that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or results in adverse employment decisions it would then be classified as illegal (US EEOC, n.d.). Due to this law being so prevalent and the severity of the outcomes that can happen when an instance of sexual harassment takes place, many employers have sexual harassment training for all of their employees to take so it is understood what they can or can't do in the workplace. This training is beneficial for everybody and some employees might not know the details of what is right and wrong in the workplace and how you must interact with other employees. This type of training can also protect the company from any lawsuit as they took the proper procedures to prevent any of these actions from happening. In the United States from 2018 to 2021, there were a total of 98,411 charges alleging harassment under any basis and 27,291 charges that alleged sexual harassment (US EEOC, n.d.). In October 2017 following the #metoo movement, an increase in sexual harassment charges were seen with women filing 78.2% of the 27,291 harassment charges between 2018-2021 and 62.2% of the 98,411 harassment charges alleging any bases (US EEOC, n.d.). Even though there are probably many more cases prevalent in the U.S., it is good to see that any employees know they have an outlet to report these cases and that action can be taken against the harassers. Having a positive work environment is important for any employer or employee. When the work environment runs smoothly and there are no instances of harassment or hostility, productivity will increase and employees will be happy to come to work. Management has a big part to play as well when it comes to the work environment and they should be open and willing to listen to any complaints of harassment and deal with all complaints properly and justly. By doing this, the employees can feel comfortable coming to them with complaints and speak up when needed.
