In order to maintain an effective workforce, human resources managers must make sure employees feel valued at the companies for which they work. Thinking about companies you have worked for in the past or that you work for currently, describe what made or does make you feel like a valuable part of the team. What are some ways that your company can improve in this area? 200 words
Respond to Roxanne
I have worked for several organizations over the years and the best I would have to say would be the military. As expected, they are well structured. I had many reviews as to what my strengths were and where I could improve. I had testing to make sure I knew the information required for my position and for my next ranking. There was always an expectation for each person to advance in ranking and not become stagnate. They organized potlucks or BBQs for the organization during the holiday season. Each unit became close, and management would encourage units to get lunch together when possible. There was an open-door policy to speak to management if any issue would arise. Also, they encouraged everyone to seek any educational possibility.
I have also worked for educational organizations where only management would have bonuses and would buy pizza as an equal reward to not giving bonuses to the employees. The morale in this organization was low and there was a huge turnover. The job description was always added to with no increase in wages. The employees were disgruntled and always looking for an equal paying job or better. We would have a mandatory meeting every week to review what we need to improve on as employees. It was more of a rant. There was never any productive feedback to improve individually. However, once a year they would do a fun yet mandatory event for the employees to build rapport and morale. This was a fun event annually yet not productive. From my time at this organization, I did find a new job that made me feel appreciated. This job could have benefited from having a resource manager to help with the overall morale of the company and adjust wages.
Org. Communication
Dove has continued its social media public relations (PR) campaign on beauty and self-esteem. In 2014, Meaghan Ramsey presented "Why Thinking You’re Ugly is Bad for You" at a TED Talks event.
In the TED Talk presentation, Ramsey does not mention Dove. Without focusing on the organization in the speech, why would this be a good PR event for Dove? What does it achieve for the organization? Why do you think Ramsey, who is the Global Director of the Dove Self-Esteem Project, chose this way to communicate with Dove's customers (and potential customers)? What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages?
Respond to Devin
In Ramsey's ted talk, I believe that the decision to not mention dove was incredibly smart. Ramsey's discussion was very personable and relatable to people everywhere. As she mentioned, the images that are now advertised in media and all outlets are extremely leading to women and men's self-image. The standard is simply unattainable. Which then aligns with Dove's beauty campaign. Dove's "Real Beauty" campaign focuses on there not being a one standard for beauty. With a goal of promoting women's and men's self-image and self-esteem. The campaign focuses on the fact that it is ok to not look like the models and actors that we see, it is simply ok to look ourselves and be and feel beautiful in our own skin. I believe that Ramseys Ted Talk focuses on this. Even with her own personal story, making this personable for the viewer. Which is the goal for Dove's campaign to reach customers and potentially new customers. This achieves personality for the organization and repour with their audience. Would you want to purchase a handbag from an influencer who post videos of themselves making fun of others, or simply throwing away items that are far beyond the average workers price range? Typically, that answer would be a big NOPE. We wouldn't like someone profiting off of hard-earned dollars who shows very little respect for those who earn them. However, in this situation, customers want to support Dove because they are not bluntly promoting their products but instead focusing their energy on a cause that reaches so many who can relate to it without that obvious "quid pro quo" of you buying products. This is a major advantage of this kind of promotion for Dove. As stated, by going in this direction the company is not looked at as this huge corporate firm trying to make a profit, but instead a company who cares how customers feel and view themselves first and foremost. The only disadvantage to this is if the viewer does not make the connection to Ramsey and Dove. If one did not know that Ramsey was connected with the Dove organization, I'm unsure if they would benefit, but also this still allows the organizations message to be put out there, regardless of the connection being recognized or not. The overall conversation has been started, which is the first step in change.
General Psychology
In this unit, you have learned about several factors related to human cognition. Choose something you have learned related to thinking, intelligence, or language, and teach your classmates what you have discovered.
Respond to Annette
One interesting aspect of human cognition is the concept of "cognitive biases." These are systematic patterns of deviation from the norm or rationality in judgment, and they often influence how we think, make decisions, and interpret information. One common cognitive bias is the "confirmation bias," which is the tendency to search for, interpret, and remember information in a way that confirms one's pre-existing beliefs or hypotheses. For example, if someone believes that a particular diet is the best for health, they might focus on articles and research supporting this view while ignoring evidence. This bias can limit our ability to think critically and objectively. Understanding cognitive biases is crucial because they can affect everything from everyday decision-making to large-scale societal issues. By being aware of these biases, we can work towards minimizing their impact by actively seeking out diverse perspectives and challenging our own assumptions. This awareness can lead to more balanced thinking and better decision-making in both personal and professional contexts.
Pathophysiology
For this discussion board, let us discuss this scenario. A 70-year-old man who has hypertension and smokes, wakes up one morning and cannot move his left side. Both his arm and leg are paralyzed. His wife takes him to the hospital where he is admitted for evaluation. The doctor determined that the patient had a stroke. While the wife is out of the room, the man’s son and his fiancé speak to the doctor and he informs them the patient has had a stroke and proceeds to outline the treatment plan.
Discuss what has happened to the patient at the cellular level. Which cerebral artery do you think was affected and why?
What do you think are some risk factors to having a stroke? Do they only apply to the elderly? What do you think a person can do to mitigate these risk factors?
Finally, in consideration of HIPAA, do think the doctor talking to the son and his fiancé was appropriate? Explain your rationale.
Respond to Nicole
The 70-year-old man likely experienced an ischemic stroke, which occurs when there is a blockage or reduction of blood flow to a part of the brain. At the cellular level, this interruption in blood flow results in a lack of oxygen and nutrients, causing brain cells to become ischemic and begin to die. Without oxygen, the affected neurons in the brain cannot function properly, leading to cell death and irreversible damage in the area of the brain supplied by the blocked artery. As a result, the man experiences paralysis on the left side of his body, indicating that the stroke affected the right hemisphere of the brain, which controls motor function on the opposite side of the body.
It is likely that the stroke occurred in the middle cerebral artery (MCA), which supplies blood to the lateral parts of the frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes. This area of the brain is involved in motor function, sensation, and speech. The MCA is the most common site for ischemic strokes due to its large size and high flow of blood, making it more susceptible to blockages.
Risk factors for stroke include hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and a history of heart disease. These risk factors are not just for the elderly; people of all ages can develop these conditions, which increase the likelihood of a stroke.
Regarding HIPAA, I think the doctor speaking to the son and his fiancée without explicit patient consent may not be appropriate. According to HIPAA regulations, healthcare providers are required to protect patient confidentiality and privacy. Information should only be shared with family members or others if the patient has given consent or if the healthcare provider believes the individual has a legal right to access the information. In this case, unless the patient authorized the discussion or was unable to provide consent, the doctor should not have disclosed medical details to the son and fiancée.
Reimbursement Methodologies
It is important for employees of health care providers to become familiar with their state's health and human services programs in order to provide helpful information to patients. The Medicaid system is one of these programs with its operation differing from state to state. What are your views on the future of the Medicaid program in your state? In your opinion, what factors greatly influence the Medicaid conversation in your state or region? My state is Mississippi.
Respond to Glenda
The future of Medicaid in Ohio, like in many other states, depends on various factors, including policy changes, funding, and enrollment trends. The ongoing conversation surrounding Medicaid in Ohio is influenced by several key factors:
Unwinding of pandemic-era policies: The continuous enrollment requirement during the COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in Medicaid enrollment. As the state returns to regular eligibility determination processes, changes in enrollment numbers and funding will need to be considered.
Eligibility criteria: Ohio's Medicaid eligibility guidelines, including income thresholds and exclusions, will continue to shape the program's coverage and impact.
Billing and reimbursement rates: Medicaid payment rates for healthcare services and the fee schedule will influence provider participation and access to care.
Administrative policies and guidelines: Changes to policies, such as the Caresource and Molina coverage through the State/County Job and family Services, can affect how Medicaid is administered and delivered to eligible individuals.
In my opinion, the future of Medicaid in Ohio will be greatly influenced by the state's ability to navigate these factors while ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare services for low-income and vulnerable populations.
Computer Essentials
Reflect on what you have learned about computer hardware in this unit. Identify and discuss an input or output device that you would like to add to your computer system in the future and why. Examples are 3D printers, biometric scanners, game controllers, graphic tablets, graphics accelerators (GPUs/FPGAs), and adaptive devices.
Response to Keith
There are many options for output devices that would make a computer more useful. Some of these examples include: a projector for displaying a movie or slide show, a printer, external speakers for better sound quality, or an additional monitor to work more efficiently. These are all output devices because the computer has taken the input, processed it into useful information, displayed it onto the screen, and saved it for future reference or use. One of the output devices that I currently have and enjoy is an external Bluetooth speaker for playing music. The sound quality from the Bluetooth speaker is much better than the sound quality of the speakers that come with the laptop. An output device that would be very useful for me would be a printer. Usually if I need to print something, I will just print it from my local library for ten cents a page and save the expense and hassle of owning a printer. One of these days I may decide to break down and buy a printer for myself.
Intercultural Management
Each member of the class has now identified and chosen a target populated area. For this discussion, share your thoughts, techniques, ideas, and sources on how to best develop recommendations for balancing economic decisions based on culture or subcultures of the intended market. An example would be a culturally sensitive advertising campaign.
Respond to Alisha
Cultural Sensitivity in Economic Decision-making
Balancing economic decisions with cultural sensitivity is essential for long-term success in culturally diverse markets. Multinational corporations like McDonald’s exemplify this balance by adapting global branding strategies to local cultural values. Their ability to tailor products and campaigns to align with the preferences and traditions of specific regions highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity in economic decision-making. For instance, McDonald’s in India introduced the McAloo Tikki, a vegetarian burger created to align with the cultural and religious values of the Indian population, where vegetarianism is widespread due to Hindu and Jain beliefs. Recognizing that beef is considered sacred in India, McDonald’s refrained from including beef in its menu offerings, ensuring its products respected local values (Warc, 2024). This adaptation reflects an understanding of how food preferences are tied to cultural and religious identity, making the brand more relatable to its target market. Similarly, in Japan, McDonald’s introduced the Teriyaki Burger, blending its global menu with local tastes. Japan’s emphasis on quality, balance, and presentation is reflected in McDonald’s approach, ensuring that packaging and service meet the high standards expected in Japanese culture. Furthermore, Japan’s focus on sustainability has influenced McDonald’s to adopt eco-friendly practices, showcasing its commitment to respecting cultural priorities (Abita, 2024). These examples highlight that culturally sensitive campaigns extend beyond marketing. They encompass product development, service delivery, and corporate responsibility. By investing in cultural understanding and aligning business practices with local values, corporations can strengthen their brand’s reputation and foster trust among diverse audiences. Developing recommendations for balancing cultural considerations with economic goals requires several strategies. First, thorough cultural research helps businesses understand the values, preferences, and traditions of their target population. Second, collaborative engagement with local partners, influencers, and community leaders ensures alignment with cultural expectations. Lastly, flexible strategies that adapt global policies to local norms while maintaining the core brand identity are critical (Kim & Milner, 2019). By employing such strategies, businesses not only achieve their economic objectives but also build meaningful connections with the communities they serve. As demonstrated by McDonald’s, respecting cultural diversity enhances customer loyalty and creates a sustainable model for global operations. What are your thoughts on the balance between global standardization and cultural adaptation in business strategies? Are there other examples or techniques you believe could help achieve this balance effectively?

Critical Thinking
Consider the fallacies of relevance listed in Chapter 8 of our textbook. Think about a recent conversation or a recent news or magazine article you have read. Identify two fallacies of relevance you noticed in the conversation or article. You must list and discuss fallacies by name, as discussed in Chapter 8 of the textbook. Consider how you, personally, might avoid committing fallacies of relevance, and list two ways you can avoid them in the future. In your replies to students, note some polite ways to point out when someone commits a fallacy of relevance.
Respond to Kelly
I came across a news article when I was looking for things to do this discussion that caught my eye. It is a controversial policy proposal. I noticed two clear examples of fallacies of relevance.
Ad Hominem Fallacy: One writer dismissed an opponent's argument by attacking their character, stating that the person was "unqualified to comment" due to their lack of formal education on the topic. Instead of addressing the actual points raised, the writer focused on discrediting the individual, which shifted attention away from the argument itself.
Appeal to Emotion: The article also included a vivid story about a family negatively affected by the issue, aiming to elicit sympathy rather than present factual or the actual evidence supporting the policy. While emotionally engaging, this example didn't logically support the broader claim.
You ask how I would personally try to avoid committing fallacies. My thought to myself is keep it simple stupid lets...
Stay focused on the argument: When discussing issues, I’ll concentrate on the logic and evidence rather than the person delivering the argument or unrelated emotional appeals.
Ask for clarification: If I’m unsure about an argument’s relevance, I’ll pause and ask for more context or reasoning before responding, ensuring my reaction aligns with the topic.
When pointing out fallacies in conversations, I try to do so respectfully, using phrases like, "I see where you're coming from, but could we focus more on the argument itself?" or "That’s an interesting example—how does it connect to the main point?"

Part I: Throughout this unit, we have discussed ways that illustrations can help to convey a point or to exemplify an idea that a writer is trying to communicate. No doubt, you find yourself in situations all the time in which you must use illustrations. Think about a time when you conveyed a point to someone—a friend, relative, coworker, or colleague—and used an exceptionally apt illustration to drive home a point. You can also write about a time when someone provided you with an enlightening example that crystalized an idea for you. You might also choose to write about how you use illustrations in your daily life.
Do you use illustrations to teach others? How have you used examples to win an argument, teach your child a difficult lesson, or to explain a problem? In what ways are illustrations a part of your daily interactions with others?
Part II: An illustration essay operates on the principle that an argument must be supported with illustrations in order to be effective. Though you will not write an extended illustration essay in this course, it is important to understand how illustrations function to support a point and how to effectively use illustrations in your writing. Write a paragraph to support one of the following prompts; use formal academic tone and at least two specific illustrations to help support the prompt. If you use any source materials for information, be sure to cite appropriately!

Part 1:
People use illustrations on a daily basis, sometimes without even knowing it. This just helps us to paint a clearer picture of something we are explaining or to get a point across. Being in the fire service, it is important for everyone to be on the same page. When we conduct our training or respond to actual emergencies, we use our past experiences to make calls on what our next plan of attack will be. During training exercises, we try to teach everyone to see the bigger picture, not just what is in front of them. This way, they can think ahead and ensure that they are being as safe as possible because anything can happen in this line of duty. On another note, being a father isn’t all that different. There are times where your child may have been upset about losing a game or got in trouble in school. They may feel down about it, or even a little guilty. Trying to explain to them that it is all part of growing up. That people make mistakes. But it is not about the mistakes that we make, it’s about how we learn from them and move forward.
Part 2:
Arguably, Lebron James may be the best basketball player of all time. His athleticism, strength, longevity, and basketball IQ all play a part in his dominance on the court. He is able to play both ends of the floor, offense and defense. On offense, he is able to play all positions from guard to center. He can handle the ball, shoot it from behind the arc, and use his speed and power to drive it in and get an easy two points. He is able to make good passes and get his team involved. Defensively, he is known for his chase down blocks. He has won four NBA championships and just as many MVP awards. He is about to turn 40 years old and is still a dominant force on the court. He is a generational talent who has broken many records and may continue to keep expanding on them.
Learning Strategies for Success
The textbook stresses the importance of being aware of the impression that we make on others. In fact, it is critically important to remember that your social media presence can set a precedent for you before someone even makes your acquaintance. What does your social media presence reveal about you? Google yourself. What do you see? What would a potential employer think if he or she did the same? How could your social media presence today impact your future career opportunities?
Response to Angel
Hello everyone!
when I searched my name up on google I was amazed by how many government workers. Judges, Athletes and more had the same name. I think for me it is beneficial that it would leave me remaining anonymous to future employers and it be a good thing that there isn’t anything that could potentially impact my future employment. As well for my Social media platforms I believe it would leave it as simple as I am an average person posting cool things on a daily basis about work or sports I like. I believe this is a good thing but also shows me and allows me to see I could be more productive on social media making me look and seem more professional for future employers rather that’s things about my future career choice or who I am as a person.

I commonly use illustration to teach my children about things that I may not be able to show them firsthand. Most recently, I explained to my children the importance of sleeping with the bedroom door closed. Explaining to an eight-year-old that if there was a fire in the house while they were sleeping, smoke could enter their room was not registering due to her fears of some imaginary creature being under her bed. I gave her examples of a fire that I had been on that was stopped by a bedroom door and those that did not have a closed door. The room with the closed door was pristine, just as it was left by the child who occupied it, while the room with the open door was destroyed, everything cooked to a perfect burnt crisp. I explained that she could save the lives of her stuffed animals and herself by simply keeping the door closed at night, which is now part of her nightly routine.
New York City, NY, is an excellent place to vacation for people of all ages. The allure of the Big Apple attracts many people from across the world. From the Statue of Liberty to the skyline from the Hudson River, there is something to offer for all ages in New York City. Central Park in the springtime offers a lush green oasis and some peace and quiet from the surrounding concrete jungle. It is one of the few places in the city where you can ride bikes amongst the trees and rolling hills. While in the park, there are lakes where you can paddle row boats while ducks and swans float around you. You can claim your own grass area and picnic under the trees while watching the city's hustle along the perimeter. Another attraction that suits all ages is New York’s food. Kids and foodies alike can find anything they crave, from a slice of New York’s famous pizza to a juicy prime rib from a steak house. New York is a true melting pot that boasts fusion food and cuisine from all over the globe.
Management Application in Accounting
Do you think more regulations and standards are needed for setting product prices, or should all companies be free to charge any prices they want? Why, or why not?
Respond to Crystal
I believe there should be some regulations for setting product prices. While companies should have the freedom to innovate and compete in the market, unchecked pricing practices can lead to unfair outcomes for consumers and harm the economy. Regulations are necessary to prevent practices such as price gouging, monopoly pricing, and deceptive pricing.
Price gouging during emergencies or shortages, exploit consumers by significantly raising prices on essential goods. Monopolistic pricing exists when one company dominates the market, they could charge astronomical prices without fear of competition, harming consumers. Deceptive pricing would allow regulations to ensure transparency, preventing misleading discounts or hidden fees that confuse customers.
There can be disadvantages to regulations, such as regulations stifling competition and innovation. There is a critical balance with regulations. Regulatory agencies should focus on creating fair rules that promote transparency, protect vulnerable consumers, and foster healthy market competition amongst companies.
Human Resource Management Methods
Besides feedback during an evaluation, what other measures can you employ to facilitate employee improvement when there are noted deficiencies? Offer three options, and explain which you feel would work best, and explain why.
Initial post to be a minimum of 500 words and at least one supporting reference. Posts to others should be a minimum of 250 words. You should also include at least two references.
Respond to Hannah
Besides using feedback during an evaluation, there are other measures that can be used to facilitate employee improvement when there are noted deficiencies. Some of these measures are creating personalized training programs, giving opportunities for mentorship between coworkers, and creating clear concise plans that will help with development and achieving goals (Rohatinsky, et al., 2020). For training programs that are personalized to each employee these programs will aim to focus on weaknesses that have been noted as well as highlighting strengths. This can be through in person training and/or online courses. This is an effective tool because it helps focus attention on the weaker areas that require more time and resources, ensuring that these factors are used efficiently. By creating these training programs and making sure employees are following through, our company is able to give employees the opportunity to create specific skills that they need. By creating a mentorship program we are able to pair a seasoned/experienced employee with a newer, less experienced employee thereby providing the new employee with more hands-on support. This program will be effective because having a mentor at one’s fingertips promotes real-time learning and practice, as well as creating a safe space for the newer employee. By creating this safe space the newer employee will feel more comfortable asking for help and questions that will hopefully provide more opportunities to grow their skill level. Lastly, creating a development plan with clear, measurable goals and deadlines we and our employees will be able to see where they are within their professional skill set. This allows them the opportunity to see if they are on track, and if not then what they need to do to get back on track. As well, this tactic promotes taking accountability for one's actions and providing structure during the process. This process will promote confidence and motivate employees.
Out of the three options I have provided above, I believe that the best option is either the creation of a mentorship program or that and including a development plan with clear goals and deadlines would be the best option. This will provide the employee with a sort of preceptorship that they are involved in while they start their training whether that be to the job or a new skill set. Allowing them to feel safe and confident enough to ask for help, while also seeing if they are on track with where the job needs them to be overtime. Hitting deadlines sooner than later can also instil some confidence with employees. The mentorship program also offers real time feedback, application of skills, as well as emotional support. All of which can be difficult to replicate with the other measures provided. This process is also something that can be adjusted as issues or trails occur, which can be different with each employee. The overall relationship that is created during the mentorship program is something that goes above other ideas to promote employee improvement, by creating collaboration and teamwork within the individuals and the organization overall (Rohatinsky, et al., 2020).
