Part 3: Reflection on the Research Process
While compiling an annotated bibliography for the present study, the process of acquiring these resources helped me understand more contemporary topics related to child and adolescent psychology, such as the effects of social media on mental health and the effectiveness of intervention in the process. Another beneficial feature mentioned was the possibility of finding numerous peer-reviewed articles that present the advantages and disadvantages of such issues as social networking or positive psychology interventions, respectively. Using systematic reviews and meta-analyses made it easier to handle large quantities of data and made it easier to identify patterns and missing information in the literature.
However, there were some hurdles and constraints to the process. By this, many works stressed such differences as personal or community coping and cultural or socio-economic background, but the majority remained very superficial when faced with such categories. In the same respect, several articles gave statistical information in the form of numbers and percentages; however, a few did not adhere to a research methodology that can facilitate comparison with other studies. For instance, disparities in the operationalization of concepts such as mental health or well-being presented methodological problems.
What was, therefore, conspicuously lacking was an adequate emphasis on the longitudinal studies that could offer more precise causality links. The majority of studies therefore utilized cross-sectional data, which while useful does not provide information on the dynamics of issues or interventions. Another limitation was that the majority of the research conducted did not include marginalized groups, including individuals from low-income or non-western backgrounds, which may broaden the understanding of the explored topics.
