My Search Strategy for [Topic]
STEP 1: Choose one of the selected topics below for this assignment. Or, if you are currently taking another class, you could use a topic from it. If you would like to propose your own topic, discuss your idea with your professor.
Topics:
The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on higher education
The effect of supply chain issues on global commerce
The effect of pets on owners’ mental health
The effect of artificial intelligence/machine learning on higher education
Enter your topic selection here:
STEP 2: Fill in the table below as a starting point for your search. Please refer to the materials in Unit 1, including the “Identify an Information Need” learning resource and the example on climate change under the “Creating a Search Strategy” topic.
Table Section | Your answers: |
1. Select a topic. | |
2. Use a Generative AI tool (Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, or ChatGPT) to learn about your topic, narrow your focus, and come up with key words. Write a short list of keywords.
3. Write a focused research question.
4. Write a preliminary topic statement based on what you learned. [You will use research to validate (or revise) this early assumption.]
5. List words or phrases from table sections 3 and 4 that express the main ideas of your topic (key concepts). Two to four concepts are generally enough to capture the meaning.
6. Consider dates, geographic locations, and/or other relevant limiting factors to narrow your search.
7. Now find relevant synonyms for each of the main ideas listed in table section 5.
8. Write different forms of the words or phrases you listed (if any). For example: Pollute, pollution, pollutants = pollut* (using truncation). |
STEP 3: Create a Boolean Search Statement using an AI tool. Ask the Generative AI tool to create a Boolean search statement related to your topic. Complete both parts.
Part 1: Share screenshot(s) of the results.
Part 2: Share a link OR the text of the entire AI generated Boolean search strategy here:
STEP 4: Open the UMGC Library page; copy and paste the AI generated Boolean search statement into the library’s OneSearch tool. Provide a full screenshot of the results of your search – include the search statement, the number of results, and at least two of the results.
Share a full screenshot of your initial results here:
STEP 5: Now, evaluate the results and create your own BEST Boolean search statement. You may use parts from your Unit 2 Discussion search and/or the AI search. Try it in the library’s OneSearch tool. Complete both parts.
Part 1: Paste your best Boolean search statement here:
Part 2: Share full screenshot(s) of your initial results here:
STEP 6: Now you will narrow your search. Use the built-in limiters on the OneSearch results page to focus your results to a particular date range, type of publication, language, or subject area. Provide screenshot showing your search, the limiters used, and the new total number of results. The new total should be less than in Step 5.
Part 1: Tell me what limiters you used.
Part 2: Share a full screenshot of your more focused results here:
STEP 7: You may get additional and relevant information from websites. Do a Google search on your topic using keywords and review this week’s learning resources on evaluating web sites and evaluating digital sources.
Provide a link to a website that discusses the topic:
STEP 8: From the results of your searches, choose an article that you think is the best resource to get you started. Choose an article that addresses the key concepts of your research question, provides useful information, and comes from a reliable source. It should be at least three pages in length and contain the qualities of a legitimate research article as described in the Evaluate phase (look ahead to Unit 3). Choose an article that clearly refers to other sources. You will be asked to provide an example from the article of a reference to an outside source in the Article Analysis assignment in Unit 3.
Before you start using the material, capture the information that you need for a reference citation in APA 7 format. The complete citation will go on your References page of most papers.
There is good information about how to cite resources properly on the Citing and Writing page.
Here are the elements you need for an article: Author last name, first initial. (Year). Article title. Journal Title, volume(issue), page numbers. DOI or URL Elements:
|
Using the APA format examples found in the link APA 7 format, create a correct APA reference citation for your article.
Reference citation:
STEP 9: In your next assignment, you will analyze the qualities and usefulness of the article you chose. Please explain briefly (2-3 sentences) why you chose this article over the rest of the articles you found.
Type your answer here:
STEP 10: Having used a Generative AI tool to help you conduct initial research, share two key takeaways from the experience. Think about how generative AI was helpful or the challenges you faced in using it.
