  1. Intro to Healthcare Statistics

  • What do you see as the most vital role of statistics in health care? Explain why.

  • Response to Karrie

Hi, my name is Karrie Ann. I live in Bradenton, FL. I'm from Geneva, Ohio, and recently moved to Bradenton, Florida. I am a fur mom. I have two cats named Chloe, who's 15 years old, and Salem, who is one year old. I adopted him when we moved down here. I am currently working towards my Associate of Science in Health Information Science/Medical Coding. My career goal is to become a medical biller/coder. I'm hoping to gain a better understanding of how technology transforms healthcare.

The main function of statistics in healthcare is to support evidence based decision making, affecting many areas such as patient care, resource management, and medical research by improving the patient care, informing public health, while ensuring the safety and efficacy of new treatments, also supporting medical research. Drawing attention to health inequities such as income or ethnicity. Healthcare systems must use data to prioritize funding and treatment options. Making sure that the new treatments are safe and effective.

  1. Intro to Health Information Management

  • This unit emphasizes the importance of health care accreditation and the role it plays in protecting sensitive information and providing quality patient care. Select one of the big five health care accreditation organizations (TJC, CARF, URAC, NCQA, COA), and outline a security standard or policy that you find interesting. How do you feel this standard/policy improves privacy and/or patient care? Also, describe how health care accreditation can impact the reputations of medical providers.

  • Response to Monica

Part I: My name is Monica, and I have lived in Virginia for the past four years. I have been on active duty in the Army since 2020, and my current goals include completing my degree while on my brief tour overseas and starting my Bachelor’s degree when I return stateside.

Part II: Although hospitals are not required to become accredited by The Joint Commission, most choose to seek accreditation because it shows a high level of standards met by the hospital. The process to become accredited by The Joint Commission includes data analytic tools, on-site visits, and patient care reviews.

  1. Ecology and Environment

  • Think about the ecological biome that you currently live in or grew up in and share your thoughts with the class. How would you classify your biome – temperate forest, temperate grassland, etc.? What are the dominant types of vegetation and animal species that live there? How have human activities changed your biome over time?

  • Response to Steven

Hello classmates. My name is Steven Jones, but I go by my middle name Kyle. I work for Sanford Fire Dept located just outside Orlando FL. I am in my 24th year with the department. I am currently in the position of Fire Inspector/ Fire Investigator. I am finishing up my bachelor’s degree in public administration. This degree is required to continue moving up the ranks within the department.

I am married with two awesome sons that are 18 and 14. My wife and I just had our 20th anniversary. My oldest is in college and my youngest is in 8th grade. My youngest son is currently playing soccer which keeps me busy. I absolutely love being outdoors hunting, fishing, golfing or being at the beach.

I grew up and still live on the St. Johns River. This is located in central/ eastern Florida. The biome would be considered temperate coniferous forest. There is a lot of swamp land surrounding most of the river. The dominant types of vegetation are trees and plants that love water such as cypress and water oaks. The underbrush is comprised of mostly sawtooth palms and scrub oaks. Animal species include deer, bear, turkeys, a variety of birds and small rodents. There is also a large number of reptiles that rule the water ways such as alligators, snakes and turtles. One of the, in my opinion, cooler animals are the manatees.

Indians used to live along the river. There are still remnants of pottery used by the Indians that can be found along the riverbanks. Also, there are mounds of deposited shells from the Indians eating muscles located along the riverbanks. One of the biggest impacts along the river are the sewage plants that deposit waste and power plants that utilize the water for cooling. Unfortunately, these pollutants negatively impact the eco system within the river basin.

  1. Principles of Microeconomics

  • Accounting argues that opportunity costs should not be considered when evaluating alternatives. Economics believes that opportunity costs should always be considered. With which of these statements do you agree? Why?

  • Response to William Reno

Good Morning;

My name is William. I live in KY. I work in Franchising for a Global Brand, where I support Global Operations. The overall goal I have is completing the degree I recklessly abandoned in my youth.

Part II:

Whew that is a tough one. Having worked so long in franchising and being a prior franchisee myself. I tend to lean into the accounting stance. Being risk adverse and seeing how many times gambles went wayward. I found myself always managing from Bottom-Up. Which does hurt opportunities as they are presented.

  • Response to Ryan

Hi, my name is Ryan Hunger, I am a disabled US Army Veteran and a current employee of the Department of Defense as well as a Union steward for my local on the installation where I work, I have been there since December of 2011. I have been deployed twice both in support of Iraqi Freedom, once to Iraq 2005-2006 and to Kuwait in 2008. I currently work for the DOD as a security assistant (Verifying Official), I was federal Police Officer before that when back surgery forced my exit from that field. The most interesting thing about my current job is being able to help my fellow veterans get the credentials they are eligible to receive once retired or service connected with a disability through Veterans Affairs. I am currently married to my wife of 11 years, and we just welcomed our 5th child into this wonderful world on 28 October, so my kids range from 10-newborn. I am a history and photography guy when it comes to military conflicts that I have or had family serve in. My interest in this class is to gain a better understanding of how a business is run and functions properly. I’m currently considered a Junior and i am a criminal justice program transfer into the Business program due to my law enforcement days being behind me due to medical issues. My anticipated completion of my degree is sometime in mid to late 2026. When I was in middle and high school, I worked with my parents in our small t-shirt printing business until we got pushed out of our target areas by bigger and much faster operations that did not require outsourcing to get the artwork done for the shirts like we did that took time. I have recently traveled back to my birth state of Alaska on a cruise with my wife and then 4 children in May, we have another cruise set for the Caribbean in 2026, but i would love to be able to take my family to historic battle site all over the world so they can see where their family members fought for their country but i will not take them to 2 of the places we fought. I would love to take the entire family to Europe to see the places where my late paternal grandfather fought during WW II but that requires loads of planning and a great deal of saving up money to make it happen. I think it would be a great history lesson for them to see those places in person. I can take them to American fought battle sites easier and with a little less cost unless you add in Pearl Harbour then the price goes up a lot.

  1. Organizational Communication

  • Andrew Fastow, the former chief financial officer (CFO) of Enron who was convicted of wire and securities fraud, explains that the culture of an organization starts with the behavior of the top executives. Employees do not follow empty rhetoric though: Employees imitate the behavior and decision-making processes of top management (Useem, 2016). Based on what you have learned in this unit, do you believe this is an accurate statement? How big of an effect can empty rhetoric have on organizational behavior?

  • Respond to Dashia

Hello everyone,

Andrew Fastow, the former CFO of Enron, makes a strong point about how the culture of a company starts with its leaders. When top executives act ethically and make good decisions employees are likely to follow their example.

However if leaders only talk about values without truly living them what we call empty rhetoric employees will notice this and create distrust and make people less motivated at work. In short I believe Fastow’s statement is accurate but genuine actions from leaders are crucial for a healthy organizational culture and empty words can have a negative impact on how employees behave and feel at work.

  1. Critical Thinking

  • Introduce yourself to your classmates with three assertions, one being a future goal. Chapter 1 of our textbook explains the difference between arguments and assertions. Use one of your assertions in an argument, and state if it is a premise or a conclusion, like so:

Hi everyone, here goes:

1. I am Miguel Balboa from Boston.

2. I also go by Mike.

3. I aim to surf regularly this year.

Argument:

I aim to surf regularly because it is part of a healthy lifestyle.

I used assertion #3 as a conclusion here.

From MS. I go by Millie. My major is business.

Part II: Our textbook author states that assertions do "...little other than impart information." Why do you think assertions should be true? In other words, why does truth matter? Excellent posts will use examples from Part I in your explanation.

  • Response from Frank

My name is Frank Schmidt from Westminster, Maryland.

I am a Section Manager for my local Water Utility.

I will go to the gym more frequently this year.

Argument:

I will go to the gym more frequently this year because regular exercise is the best way to stay in shape.

Assertion 3 is my conclusion.

Assertions should be true to more easily convey a line of reasoning to convince others of the conclusion. If something is untrue, there will be no facts to support it. If I do not regularly exercise, it will be hard to personally convince others of the effectiveness of exercise.

  1. Psychology

  • Researchers try to use a sample of the population that is truly representative of the people in whom they are interested—one of the main reasons for using random selection. Even so, the sample is usually selected from within a particular segment of the social world in which the researchers themselves live and work.

For example, in the United States there are some fairly distinct differences between people from the Northeast and people from the Southeast, and the same can be true in many other countries. There are also differences between large city populations and populations living in the countryside.

If a psychologist is conducting a study in a particular geographical area of a country, how might regional differences impact the study's results? What measures could or should the psychologist take to minimize the impact?

  • Response to Andrew

Good morning everyone,

My name is Andrew Thomas and I currently reside in the Savannah Georgia area with my wonderful wife. For the last 4 years I have been a firefighter in the area I reside. Prior to the fire service I was in the Army for 4 years, 3 active duty as a combat engineer and 1 as a cadet instructor in the reserve component out of Fort Knox Kentucky. Professionally I hope to earn the position of Battalion Chief and inspire firefighters throughout my career to obtain an education. Academically, I am currently pursing my associates degree in Fire Science, though I may change my degree plan to a bachelors in Fire Administration.

Regional differences may impact the study results from cultural differences, the socioeconomic status, and environmental factors. For culture, the language in which you speak may not be the same for the region you're in, certain behaviors and and attitudes may be perceived differently. The predominant socioeconomic status can affect the quality of research due to the lack of educations tools and resources available. Environmental factors are important to research as the time of year the study will be conducted may be during the season for other natural disasters to occur, which can affect the well being of the participants. To minimize the negative impact on the study psychologist should not only research the culture, economics and environmental factors but also employ a team with a written set of standard operating procedures to keep the research valid and reliable. Then the data could be used to compare the studies across a wide spread of areas.

  1. Financial Management

  • Preview the course at a high level for all eight units. What specific topic interests you most, and why? Utilizing the CSU Online Library, find a current article about the specific topic from the course that interests you most. Briefly summarize the article and its relevance to the entrepreneurship field, including the link to the article. Explain one global implication of the topic mentioned in the article. In the interest of a diverse discussion forum, do not bring forward an article already presented by a fellow student.

Your post should be at least 200 words, and you should respond to at least two of your classmates with substantive replies of at least 100 words per reply. This discussion board is your only assignment for this unit, so make sure that you take the time to analyze your findings and provide quality posts.

  • Response to Lynda

Hi, entrepreneurs! I'm excited to work with such interesting people--people who start new enterprises!

The article that I'm including here is about why entrepreneurs need to have financial knowledge. We know you are driven, resourceful, inventive people, but a firm also needs to make money. That's why we're here in this class! So check out this article for a practical perspective on the value of this knowledge, where the author will tell you that (these are very close paraphrases to his language):

*you should pay close attention to your finances

*you should take care of debts

*you should create a business plan (yay! we'll do that in this class!)

*you must "understand the importance of delayed gratification"

*you should continue learning about financial literacy (yay again! we're doing that!)

  1. Management Information Systems

  • Think of a company that you currently or previously worked for or one that you are familiar with, and describe the tools used for collaboration and teamwork. Do you believe these collaboration tools are satisfactory? Why, or why not? Recommend some other tools that would work great.

  • Respond to Zoie

My name is Zoie Farmer and I'm from Tennessee. I am in the process of getting into the IT/cyber security field as of right now. My goal is to be able to travel while working, I want to see the world.

I have used slack before and it was useful for communication. Although, a major problem was people were not checking their messages often. On the other hand, the channels that did get used were so crowded that there were constant notifications, which would get distracting. Also, by the time you looked at one thing there was twenty more immediately after.

Google workspace is very useful when it comes to teamwork since it allows the entire team to work on the project at the same time allowing everyone to stay up to date and on track. Though it can have issues when it comes to being compatible with non-google tools.

  1. Critical thinking

  • Chapter 1 of our textbook explains the difference between an argument and an assertion. Give your own example of an assertion. Our textbook author states that assertions do "...little other than impart information." Why do you think assertions should be true? In other words, why does truth matter?

  • Response to Alexis

I am Alexis Steen, writing from San Jose, California. I currently serve as a Vice President Branch Manager at a financial institution, and I am also the CEO and Founder of Financial Literacy for All, Inc. My mission is to inspire my daughter and other young women to understand that, regardless of the challenges they may face, they can achieve success and complete their degrees.

The alignment of assertions and arguments is a key component of critical thinking, as these assertions serve to support one’s beliefs and truths during discussions. By presenting these beliefs, which are grounded in truthful and research-backed information, we create a solid foundation for our arguments.

For example, it is reported that only 1 in 3 adults are financially literate. If I were to ask my students on the first day of class about the 5 C’s of credit, I would expect that only 33% of the class would be able to provide the correct answer.
