This article highlights that teenagers who spend longer than three hours on social media sites are twice as likely to develop mental health issues such as depression or anxiety.
Through social media, comparing themselves to others produces unhealthy body-related concerns along with excessive device use, hurting their overall personal well-being. Dr.
Murthy believes that social media platforms need to display a Surgeon General warning that raises public understanding about mental health risks (Murthy, 2024). He also recommends that the Congress needs to establish regulations that protect young users against hurtful online encounters while blocking harmful content and addictive platform elements, according to Dragan. Through his ef forts, Dr.
Murthy supports the immediate need for parental and school-based interventions focused on developing healthier digital practices for young people. Real-Life Situation A real-life example of the impact of social media is my own experience and struggles with comparing myself to unrealistic body standards seen on these platforms. This is a serious challenge I still face, as the constant exposure to idealized images sometimes makes me feel the need to be skinny or modify some parts of my body to fit society expectations and feel a sense of belonging. Being able to identify this problem has made me more mindful of the content I consume and to be more aware that every post I see can be edited. This has also helped me to stay motivated and to keep a focus on healthier and more positive influences. I have also seen the same effects on one of my close friends, who experienced mental health challenges because she spent too much time looking at edited images on Instagram resulting in body image problems. The pursuit of trying to meet unrealistic beauty standards led her to develop dangerous eating habits over several years. The study results align with the author's findings since half of the adolescent study participants stated that social media worsened their body image. Through her social media network, she mostly connected with friends, yet the algorithm regularly showed her idealized posts until her self-doubts became harmful. To rebuild her self-worth, confidence, and create healthier connections with social media, she finally sought therapy .

Psychology as my field of study, aligns with the subjects detailed in this article. Particularly regarding the impact of social media on self-esteem and mental health. Modern psychology , including both clinical and developmental subfields, seeks to understand how social media alters functional self-esteem and mental health. Research demonstrating media influences alongside cognitive distortions supports psychologists' findings about rising rates of adolescent anxiety and depression and body image problems due to social media use (Murthy, 2024). As a future psychologist, I am interested in developing interventions that promote digital well-being and mitigate social media’s negative effects on mental health. I also recognize the positive aspects of these platforms, such as connecting with family and friends and accessing content that supports personal growth. I consider that pursuing Psychology will allow me to better understand these issues and contribute to help others develop healthier relationships with the type of content or the platforms they use.
