Chapter 5 Hands-On Lab: Tissue Histology Instructions
In this exercise, you will be gaining “hands-on” experience with histology slides through a web-based resource called HistologyGuide.org. You will be navigating through a wide variety of tissue sections at various magnifications just as you would if you were using a physical microscope. For each tissue listed, you will be asked to locate and label a specific set of structures.
To document your work, please follow these steps:
Locate the specific tissue/structures at the specified magnification.
Take a screenshot of the image by clicking on the down arrow next to “Select View” in the top-right of the microscope view.
Label the required structures on the image.
Click the blue box to insert your saved image file (or insert image and then label).
Save the completed document as a .pdf and upload it into the appropriate MyCourses Assignment Folder.
All labelled images must represent your own original work and may not be copied from another student or images found online. Each image should include your initials in the corner using the same digital pen/tool used for labelling structures.
Epithelial Tissue
- Simple Squamous Epithelium
On the Histology Guide website, navigate to Slide Box > Chapter 2 Epithelium > Simple Squamous Epithelium > MH 016 @ 40x magnification. NOTE: This slide contains 4 different tissues. Using the far-right tissue of this set, find one of the many round structures known as renal corpuscles (described with a figure in the gray description box to the right of the Histology Guide screen).
Take a screenshot of the tissue at 40x with all of the following structures in view. Label each structure listed, and insert your labelled image in the box below.
lumen
squamous epithelial cells
apical surface
- Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
In the Slide Box, navigate to Chapter 2 Epithelium > Simple Cuboidal Epithelium > MH 016 @ 40x magnification. NOTE: This slide contains 4 different tissues. Use the far-right tissue on this slide.
Take a screenshot of the tissue at 40x with all of the following structures in view. Label each structure listed, and insert your labelled image in the box below.
lumen
cuboidal epithelial cells
apical surface
basal surface
basement membrane
- Simple Columnar Epithelium
In the Slide Box, navigate to Chapter 2 Epithelium > Simple Columnar Epithelium > MHS 219 @ 40x magnification.
Take a screenshot of the tissue at 40x with all of the following structures in view. Label each structure listed, and insert your labelled image in the box below.

basement membrane
goblet cells
microvilli
- Stratified Squamous Epithelium
In the Slide Box, navigate to Ch.2 Epithelium > Stratified Squamous Epithelium > MH109 @ 10x magnification.
Take a screenshot of the tissue at 10x with all of the following structures in view. Label each structure listed, and insert your labelled image in the box below.

squamous epithelial cells
apical surface
basal surface
basement membrane
- Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
In the Slide Box, navigate to Ch.2 Epithelium > Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium > MHS 222 @ 40x magnification. NOTE: Use the far-right tissue sample for the best view.
Take a screenshot of the tissue at 40x with all of the following structures in view. Label each structure listed, and insert your labelled image in the box below.
