Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an important part of business for many of today’s companies.  Many times, however, its CSR efforts are overshadowed by publicized ethical dilemmas.  Wal-Mart is a great example of this.  Here is a link to the webpage devoted to their CSR efforts:  https://corporate.walmart.com/global-responsibility.  They also have a page devoted to “Ethics & Compliance”: https://corporate.walmart.com/our-story/global-ethics-compliance.  The other side of the Wal-Mart coin, however, contains a slew of ethical issues including claims about labor law, discrimination, etc.

For this week’s discussion, visit and evaluate both Wal-Mart webpages provided and summarize their efforts for CSR and ethics.  Next, using your Information Literacy skills, locate at least one reputable article about Wal-Mart’s ethical troubles that has been published within the last 10 years.  Share a link to the article by creating a proper APA citation, summarize the article and describe the ethical issue.  Finally, answer these questions:

  • After reading about Wal-Mart’s CSR and ethical efforts versus their ethical issues, does it affect your interest in patronizing the company? Explain why or why not.

  • Do you feel the CSR/ethics strategies they employ benefit the community, or do you feel it is more of a ploy to make themselves look better?  Explain and support your conclusion.
