Skill 1: Customer Service

Example 1

Situation/Task

A year ago, I started working part-time in Wescoe as a KU IT classroom support. This position involves in supplying the professors in the auditorium with their desired supplies and troubleshoot in case anything goes wrong during a class. Entering to this job, I had a fair amount of knowledge with technology, but this job is more important for its customer service and troubleshooting whenever professors get nervous about something going wrong during their class.

Action

During the same semester I got this job, I was having a MGMT 310 class with Jana Fitchett, which illustrated work environment and the importance of the clients. With no time, I started applying the lessons taught in the class into my work as it progressed. Frequently, getting better at being more efficient with my language and understanding the needs of my clients/professors.

Result

I was able to efficiently communicate with the professors about certain technological problems without overwhelming them with words they don’t know about. Exponentially, I got better at the job as I gained more technological information, and the proper language started coming out every time easier.

Example 2

Situation/Task

I started an internship at Automaq, a company that has the representation of John Deere in Paraguay. I rotated positions within the dealership, eventually I got to an area where analysts are tracking the performance of machines and letting the owners know how they can improve the efficiency of it.

Action

The team working there, decided for me to talk with some of the customers to communicate to them how they can make their machine more efficient. I started reading past reports made to other customers and started growing around that. Some customers do not have great vocabulary knowledge, so I had to make it as easy as possible for them to understand without getting overwhelmed with all the information. Often, I would sympathize with their discontent of the climate and asking them how they are holding overall, sometimes offering solutions to them.

Result

At the end of my time in that position, the team provided me the scores that the customers gave me and the company on surveys for customer service. I was flattered by the scores and the reviews I got. This is because many farmers do not know how the technology works and why we are helping them. Therefore, helping this people get the most out of their investment is truly emotional.

Skill 2: Verbal Communication

Example 1

Situation/Task

Growing up in Paraguay, my language was Spanish, and I went to a school which taught some classes in English. When I decided to come to KU to study, I encountered courses such as, English 101, COMMS 321, BUS 305, others. These courses put my English to test and how comfortable I feel working around it.

Action

I started pushing myself out of my comfort zone to gain more fluency and understanding. I did this by making new friends in classes and reading books such as Atomic Habits, The Intelligent Inversor, others. Also, trying to take the classes that were about communication and language more seriously.

Result

I got more comfortable in this language by gaining more vocabulary and fluency in it. By the start of my first semester, I felt like there was a language barrier stopping me from gaining more knowledge and networking but by the end of it I felt like there wasn’t any barrier.

Example 2

Situation/Task

During my internship at Nasana, a new importer and distributer of vegan food, I was assigned to deliver these goods to their selling points and making sure they take of the products because some of them have to be stored in cool places. However, the challenge was that most of the people that received these products were really stress by all the deliveries made in the same day. Also, some of these people have low education and communication levels.

Action

At the beginning it was rough, people always making me wait and often being rude to me. However, my intent was to make their job easier for mutual benefit by offering help and in cases forging a bond with them talking about things such as soccer which brings people together or offering them some of the products. Of course, this was not the case with all of them but as time passed, I would feel more confident and comfortable dealing with these people.

Result

The company let me know their appreciation for my work because the delivery time was reduced by 22% within the 2 months of me being there, saving the company money and making more deliveries per day. When I left, I discussed my strategies with the full-time people thar worked in the company that have the same level of education with those that they have to deal with. Therefore, this experience gave me a sense of self-fulfillment and rewarding by making a change in a startup company that was really thankful with my service.

Skill 3: Teamwork

Example 1

Situation/Task

During my second semester at KU, in ACCT 200, I had my first big project, the Shark Tank project. As the time progressed, one of our classmates kept missing some classes or failing to deliver his work in deadline. However, the other members of the group and myself had to overcome this situation to succeed in the project.

Action

After numerous intents of reaching out to him when he missed class or deadlines asking if he needed help, we decided to let him know our discontent with his performance and sincerely explaining to him that if this continues, we might have to report to the professor. However, he apologized and overcame this situation as a team by having meetings out of class and communicating more with us whenever we need help or have questions.

Result

We invented the stress ball that when squeezed in a certain area, David Goggins would shout motivational quotes. We ended up getting an A on the project but when we were up there presenting, there was a lot of dynamic and we never spoke over one another. We ended up forging a great team and even friendships, I am really proud of how each member complemented the team.

Example 2

Situation/Task

Within the Latin community in KU, there is many people that love soccer, as I do, but we are not that close. Therefore, I with a couple friends decided to get these people together for an intramural soccer tournament and compete. As mentioned before, some of us did not even know each other but we all had one thing in common, the love for soccer.

Action

We created a soccer group chat, organizing soccer with the members of the team and then hanging out with each other to gain more chemistry so that this shows on the field. We had to come together to succeed, and we all knew it. The team got together to watch soccer games on TV and go out at night.

Result

I believe everybody did a great part in this because even though we lost in the semi-finals by penalties, we were the team that scored most goals on the tournament. However, we knew we succeeded in creating a great team when we kept hanging out and playing soccer once the tournament ended.
