Thematic Unit Plan Assignment
Deadline: Monday, April 29, 11:59 PM
Overview
The Thematic Unit Plan is designed to showcase your ability to create a coherent series of ESL/EFL lesson plans built around a unifying theme. This assignment not only helps you practice essential curriculum design skills but also prepares you for real-world teaching contexts, including the edTPA. By developing a set of interconnected lessons, you will strengthen your capacity to align instructional activities with learner objectives while demonstrating pedagogical creativity.
Purpose & Procedure
Your main objective is to create a comprehensive unit plan that integrates language skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—under a central theme. In doing so, you will demonstrate proficiency in designing activities that cater to diverse learner needs. The assignment has two major phases: an initial outline that sketches your key ideas and a final submission presenting approximately five hours of focused, thematic instruction. Both parts will be submitted on Canvas.
3. Project Requirements
Your unit plan should begin with a descriptive title that clearly reflects the chosen theme and captures students’ interest. Next, you will introduce the context of your learners, noting factors such as their age, English proficiency level, and any cultural or educational nuances relevant to your teaching focus. You will then indicate how long you envision this unit lasting (for instance, over five one-hour lessons or a single intensive week), along with any prerequisite knowledge or skills students should possess.
From there, articulate your overall goals for the unit and outline specific, measurable objectives that your lessons will address. You will list any required materials—ranging from textbooks or handouts to audiovisual resources—and propose an engaging opener that establishes the theme and draws learners into the content.
The main component of your unit consists of daily lesson plans that collectively cover approximately five hours of instruction. Each lesson should clearly link to the broader unit goals and objectives, forming a coherent sequence that helps students build on prior knowledge and practice essential language skills. You will conclude the unit with a reflective or summarizing activity that allows learners to consolidate their gains and demonstrate their progress.
Additionally, plan for at least two assessment methods that will measure how well students have met the objectives of your unit. These may include short quizzes, creative projects, student presentations, or peer evaluations, among other possibilities.
Submission Guidelines
First, you will submit an initial Theme-Based Unit Plan Outline
Which should succinctly present the foundation of your project: its central theme, key learning aims, and a sense of the activities and materials you plan to employ. The outline serves as a guiding roadmap for your final submission. You may consult the sample on Canvas if you need structural ideas.
Then, you will submit your Final Thematic Unit Plan
A single document that integrates the outline and fleshes it out into a full set of lesson plans. This final submission is due on Canvas no later than 11:59 PM on April 29. Accepted formats include PDF or Word files (.doc or .docx).
Assessment Criteria (See Rubric on the Assessment Module)
You will be evaluated based on the overall clarity and organization of your plan, its originality and creativity, its alignment with the needs and abilities of ESL/EFL learners, and the thoroughness with which you address each requirement. Ensuring that your unit’s objectives, activities, and assessments all work cohesively to achieve the stated learning goals is a crucial factor in receiving a strong grade.
Tips for Success
Try to select a theme that genuinely interests you, as your enthusiasm will likely translate into more engaging activities for your learners.
Maintain a logical flow between lessons, and keep in mind realistic timings for each segment of instruction.
Incorporate varied modes of learning—such as individual work, small-group activities, and whole-class discussions—to address different learner preferences.

Possible Themes (Optional)
Though you may choose any theme that suits your interests and your prospective student demographic, some popular examples include topics like cultural celebrations around the world, global environmental issues, historically significant events, or contemporary social media trends. Whichever theme you choose, aim to provide real-world relevance and opportunities for students to practice authentic language use.
