The Background of the Study contains an overview of your research focus. Why the study is worth conducting, how it differs from other research on the topic, how the study will be completed, and how it will expand on previous research are clearly articulated. Approximately 4 paragraphs.

The problem statement is clear and includes this main statement: The problem that will be examined/explored in this study is…

Evidence (within the last few years) is included to support the fact that this is an actual business problem and why businesses should care about it.

Includes support to justify that there is a gap in research. Approximately 2 paragraphs.

The purpose statement aligns with the problem statement and starts with a main statement:

The purpose of this [methodology], [design] study is to [explore, examine] …

The population and sample are discussed. The location is included. If quantitative, the variables are clearly identified. Approximately 2 paragraphs.

The research questions are aligned with the problem statement and purpose statement. If quantitative, the appropriate hypotheses are included. If qualitative, interview questions are clearly separate from the research questions. Approximately 2 paragraphs.

The Advancing Theoretical Knowledge section contains an explanation of the 1 or 2 theories/models that frame your research. The theories/models are clearly aligned with the topic, problem statement, purpose statement, and research questions. How your study will fill the gap and advance (add to) the theory or model’s legitimacy is clearly articulated. Approximately 3 paragraphs.

In the Application to Business Administration section, clearly explain how business practitioners may benefit from your research and how the results of your study could help a business or industry overcome the business problem you identified. How your study applies to an industry or type of business is clearly articulated. Approximately 2 paragraphs.

In the Significance of Study section, provide an overview of how your proposed research aligns with previous research in your field and how the results of your study will add value to the practice in the field of business administration. The expected benefits, values, and contributions of your study are clearly explained. Approximately 2 paragraphs.

The Methodology section clearly aligns with the problem statement, purpose statement, and research questions. The methodology is defined using a scholarly citation. Approximately 2 paragraphs.

The Research Design section clearly aligns with your chosen methodology. A discussion of the population is included along with the specific group (sample) you will collect data from. Your data collection instrument (survey, interview, etc.) is clearly defined and supported. Explain how your chosen instrument is valid and reliable. Approximately 2 paragraphs.

Definition of Key Terms: No more than 8 terms are listed, and all are supported with scholarly citations.

Assumptions, Limitations, and Delimitations: An introductory paragraph regarding the importance of these three elements is included. At least 3 assumptions and limitations and 2 delimitations are included and supported. Approximately 4 paragraphs total for this section.
Summary and Organization of the Remainder of the Study: Include a sentence summary of each of the sections above, a transition to Chapter 2, and a brief overview of what to expect in Chapters 3, 4, and 5 are included. Approximately 2 paragraphs.
