The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked conversations about the privacy surrounding sensitive medical information that could possibly be used in machine learning. Information captured from doctors' voice recordings concerning patient's information being used by AI could present a privacy issue. It makes one think of medical ethics and if maybe we are getting ahead of ourselves with the information that we are making available to these artificial intelligence operations.
What are your thoughts on sensitive medical information being made accessible to artificial intelligence? What are some of the privacy implications that could arise with patient medical data being used in this way? The goal of AI in medicine is to be able to eventually prevent disease. In your opinion, should we get there by any means necessary?

The application of artificial intelligence in the field of medicine is promising but raises real concerns about patient privacy and the ethics of medicine. Artificial intelligence systems are prone to access extremely large collections of data voice recordings, electronic medical records, and images from diagnosis to 'learn' patterns that can be used to help speed diagnoses or predict the likelihood of disease. While the goal is appealing, working with highly sensitive health data without strict privacy constraints can be dangerous. For example, if a recording of a doctor's voice includes mention of the recognizable patient details and the information then flows into a machine learning model, it could release protected health information without patient authorization. One of the biggest implications is a risk of data breaches or exploitation. Data once it has been collected can be accessed or shared, especially if it is kept in cloud storage where it does not have proper encryption. While the idea of using AI to prevent illness is exciting, I do not believe we should do it by any means necessary. Patient dignity and privacy must always be a top priority, even in the quest for medical breakthroughs. Therefore, as we continue to integrate AI into healthcare, it is necessary to have strict ethical guidelines and data protection mechanisms in place to ensure that innovation does not come at the cost of patient trust and safety.

AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by enabling more precise diagnoses, forecasting disease progression, tailoring treatments to individuals, and even offering proactive care suggestions. However, when dealing with sensitive medical information, the risks to privacy become significant, raising important ethical questions.
AI can help improve healthcare in many ways. By using large amounts of medical data, AI can help doctors find diseases earlier, create more personalized treatments, and notice patterns that people might miss. For example, AI can listen to doctors’ voice notes and help make their paperwork more accurate and faster. It can also handle simple tasks like writing medical notes or sorting patient symptoms, which gives doctors more time to care for patients. While these tools can be very helpful, they must be used carefully. AI should not have free access to private medical information. To keep patients safe, we need rules that make sure people give clear permission, their data is protected and anonymous, and the systems are watched closely. Using AI in healthcare should always follow basic values like doing good, avoiding harm, being fair, and respecting people’s choices.
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into modern medicine, we stand at a critical crossroads. Moving forward responsibly means striking a careful balance between harnessing AI’s transformative potential and safeguarding the privacy, dignity, and fundamental rights of patients. AI must be developed to support and strengthen healthcare, not to compromise or exploit it.

I see the future of telehealth becoming more frequently used for routine care for patients. Telehealth can be used for virtual consultations between you can your primary care doctor/therapist. You can use telehealth for follow-ups with your doctors, or you can use it to ask questions or for emergency details with an on-call registered nurse or doctor. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of telehealth increased so much due to the restrictions that were in place because of the pandemic, but now the use of telehealth is still popular due to the convince of what it can offer. This is very interesting to me because no matter the roadblocks that might make telehealth difficult for you, like technological issues, this can still be an efficient solution for others. You can communicate with your healthcare team, refill prescriptions, or even make appointments, all without leaving the comfort of your home.
