COMS 322 Speech Critique
Total Points Possible: 10
Due: Wednesday on Canvas by 10 pm
Assignment:
You will find a recorded speech that is of interest to you and that is at least 5-10 minutes in length, but no longer than 20 minutes. These could be TedTalks, special occasion speeches, like honoring someone for an award, commencement ceremonies, political speeches, speeches at events, etc. Your goal is to evaluate the speaker based on course material we have covered in class.
Requirements:
You will evaluate the performance in a 1-2 page, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, 12pt. font paper. This paper must include five paragraphs:
Introduction Paragraph:
Include an attention getter, thesis, and preview statement
Body Paragraphs
Audience-Centered Speech Content:
How did or didn't the speaker connect the speech to the audience? Provide evidence to support your argument
Think back to the material we covered in week 1 about audience analysis
Speech Delivery
What behaviors of delivery aided or detracted from the presentation?
Be specific
Think about what you read about in textbook chapter 2 and your past experience with watching speeches
Speech Organization
Was the speech organized? Did they use transitions? Have a clear preview statement? Use examples to support your answer
Think about to week 2 and the material on organization
Conclusion: Overall speech assessment:
Based on what you learned so far in COMS 322, how would you assess the speaker’s overall speech performance? Would you argue this speech was successful or unsuccessful? Support your claims
Summarize your thoughts, restate your thesis and include a clear concluding sentence
*Within each of the body paragraphs, make sure you follow the following format:
1. Describe the speaker’s performance based on the prompt
2. Interpret their behavior – was is useful? distracting? valuable?
3. Evaluate – what can you take-away from this behavior?

Outside sources are not required, but you need to use proper in-text citations and include a reference page if you chose to quote different sources. Follow APA for this matter.
