DISCIPLINE 1: Humanities
Course 1: JOUR 2710, Media Writing: This course taught me the ends and outs of media reporting. This class primarily focused on developing skills to write for various media platforms including print broadcast and digital media. I learned different techniques for news writing feature writing and content creation for different audiences and purposes.
Course 2: PHOT 2050, Black and White Photography: This class taught me how to capture black-and-white photography using a film camera. I learned how to capture both still and moving subjects and how emphasize elements like light shadow and texture. I was also taught how to develop the film and manually set the settings on the camera to capture the perfect shot.
Course 3: ART 3200, Art Education for Teachers: this course taught me how to incorporate Art into my lesson plan. I learned different artistic skills and techniques art history and theory and curriculum development for different age groups and learning environments.
Course 4: MUED 4670, Music for the Young Child: This class focused on teaching engaging activities and promoting musical exploration and development through play. We learned different nursery rhymes and how to use different instruments and toys to make music as well as call and response techniques to use in class.
Course 5: HIST 2010 & 2020, Survey United States History I and II: This class taught American history and covered major political social and economic developments from the colonial period to the present day.
DISCIPLINE 2: Social Sciences
Course 1: NFS 4251, Nutrition for the Young Child: this class taught me the nutritional needs of humans from birth up to the adult age, primarily focusing on young children in the infant to adolescent years. I learned the roles of essential nutrients like proteins and carbohydrates, certain dietary guidelines, how to meal plan, navigate picky eaters and how to understand food allergies and dietary needs. I feel like I benefited from this class a lot due to having a then one year old and having gone through a lot of the similar challenges parents can face while dealing with kids and food.
Course 2: SPED 3010, Learners with Exceptionalities: this class taught me how to support students with range of developmental differences. Topics covered in this class consisted of IEP’s, differentiated instruction, and specialist support. We also learned about the different learning disabilities and intellectual disabilities as well as speech and language impairments. I also learned how to collaborate with parents and other professionals to ensure open communication remains in place so that these kids have and continue to receive support.
Course 3: LIBS 4150, Books, Media, Literacy for Children: This class taught the importance of media literacy and how to encourage kids to read more. I learned about how to incorporate different types of media into a curriculum and how to promote media literacy both in and outside the classroom and how to encourage parents to do the same.
Course 4: CJA 2200, Prevention & Control of Crime: This class taught me how to address crime and covered the different branches within the criminal universe as well (law enforcement, corrections, criminal law, crime policies etc.)
Course 5: ECE 3310, Human Development (Birth to 8): this class taught me the physical mental social and emotional changes that occur during a child’s first eight years of life.
