Competency Name: Operations Management


Competency Statement: This course provides an overview of the critical elements associated with operations
management for application in both manufacturing and service industries. Topics include
operations strategy, process design, capacity planning, forecasting, production scheduling,
supply chain and inventory control, quality assurance and sustainability, as well as fundamental
elements of project management, continuous improvement and databased analysis and
decision-making.

Competency Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

  1. Develop an understanding of production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

  2. Describe and Understand the DMAIC Process

  3. Develop an understanding of the tools used to implement continuous process improvement (e.g., benchmarking systems, process mapping, process costing, maturity models, capability maturity model, contract management maturity model, process improvement metrics, process improvement methods, and supplier workshops) in accordance with organizational objectives.

  4. Develop an understanding of optimization and resource management tools (e.g.,inventory control, scheduling, TQP, and MRP).

Purpose of the Assessment

This assignment requires students to synthesize their learning and apply operations management principles to real-world business scenarios. Strong emphasis should be placed on problem-solving, strategic decision-making, and evidence-based recommendations.

Key Components of Final Assessment:

Students must develop a structured reflection essay that critically evaluates operations management within a selected business entity, such as an innovative company (e.g., Amazon, Tesla, Meta, Nvidia, Samsung, BYD, or Toyota). This paper should demonstrate comprehension of key course concepts and incorporate scholarly research to support arguments. The final submission should adhere to APA 7 guidelines and be approximately 3,000 words.

  1. Identifying an Operational Challenge: Select a specific operational issue faced by the chosen company.

  2. Investigating the Root Cause: Conduct an in-depth analysis to determine the fundamental cause of the identified problem.

  3. Assessing the Significance: Explain why addressing this issue is critical for the company’s operational efficiency and overall performance.

  4. Developing Operational Strategies: Propose strategic solutions and management practices to mitigate the issue.

  5. Recommending Practical Solutions: Present actionable steps that the company can implement to improve its operations.

Submission Artifacts:

  • Title Page: Must include the title, student’s name, course name, instructor’s name, and submission date.

  • Structured Content: Introduction, body sections, conclusion.

  • In-Text Citations & References: All sources should be properly cited following APA 7 guidelines.

  • Word Count:

  • Milestone Submission: 1,500 words (including references, figures, and tables).

  • Final Submission: 5,000 words (excluding title page and references).

  • File Format: Submit the essay as a Microsoft Word document (.docx) or another instructor-approved format.
