For this assignment you will practice applying the content you have learned so far this semester to understanding and analyzing a creative work. This creative work could be a work of visual art, song, book, film, tv show, poem, photograph, performance art, truly anything that could be considered a "creative" work. Once you have chosen your creative work, you will write a 700-800 word analysis of this piece of art that discusses how this work of art connects to our course content.

You must use this 2 readings (The Politics of Women's Body Hair - Body Hair Discrimination For Females, Kelli Jean Drinkwater: Enough with the fear of fat | TED Talk) assigned so far this semester in your analysis. (

In your paper, you should follow the following structure:

1) Brief introduction to the artist(s) and the creative work (this should not take more than 1-2 paragraphs). Who is the artist(s) or creative behind the chosen work? What is the piece (what does it look like, sound like, what genre, when was it made, etc).

2) 1-2 paragraphs of description of what you believe this creative work to be about. What issues does it touch on? What is your interpretation of this creative work?

3) In the rest of the paper you will apply course concepts to understanding/interpreting this creative work. This should be the majority of your essay. Here you will show how course texts and concepts help you understand the meaning/impact/experience/etc of this creative work. Some examples of things you might consider in your analysis (not a definitive list of questions you must answer):

  • Does a course reading provide context for the gender roles displayed in this film? How?

  • Does a relationship portrayed in this poem reflect the points made by an author we have read so far? How?

  • Has your interpretation of this piece of art changed since learning a new course concept?

  • Does this work of art explicitly challenge a reading from this course? How?

In your analysis you must provide evidence from the text to support your arguments and interpretations. You are not graded on how "accurate" your interpretation is--there is often no one way to interpret or experience a creative work.

You will be graded on:

1) How well you understand the course texts you are applying to this creative work.

2) Are at least two course texts used?

3) If the evidence and use of course texts is used in a way that supports your analysis and makes sense.

4) If the required elements of the assignment are present

5) If you have met the word minimum for the assignment

6) The legibility of your writing. Is the writing clear and proofread, with minimal to no grammatical errors.

This assignment must include citations used throughout to give credit to the source of the information provided. If you provide information on the background of an artist for example, you must cite where you found this information. Course texts must be cited both in the essay itself and in a work cited provided at the end of the essay. You are encouraged to use information from the course PowerPoints and lectures as evidence in your analysis, but these do not count toward the two course texts (including written work, podcasts, and assigned videos) that must be utilized in your analysis.
