Directions: After reading the "Jed case study" document, you will create a 12-slide presentation in which you will be applying the course material you have learned in this course to understanding and assessing for the presenting symptoms, getting to know the client and identifying a plan of action to support the client toward reducing symptoms. The topics for the slides are outlined below.
You may use the "Addiction Case Study Presentation Template" PowerPoint as a foundation for your presentation or you may create your own with each topic. Include three to five bullet points per slide.
Include speaker notes below each content-related slide to provide additional details for each topic. Please ensure the speaker notes include a minimum of 150 to 200 words. Each speaker note section should be supported by at least one scholarly resource. Refer to “Creating an Effective Power Point Presentation” in topic Resources.
Part 1 – Relationship and CollaborationSlide 1: Title
Slide 2: Relationship: The client’s experience in the first session often predicts further engagement. Review important topics to include in your first session with Jed.
What therapeutic skills are important for building rapport and an ongoing relationship? What legal and ethical considerations must be addressed in the first session?

Slide 3: Collaboration: When working with clients experiencing symptoms of substance use disorders, the complexity of symptoms and life experiences requires a multidisciplinary approach. For this specific case, list who you would want to be involved. What friends, family, other support, and other professionals would you discuss adding to a team or including in his recovery process? What are ethical and legal considerations and how would you address?

Part 2 – Understanding the ProblemSlide 4: Effects: Define the following types of effects in the context of substance use disorder

List any symptoms the current edition of the DSM as applied to case of Jed. Label diagnosis, and justify diagnosis based on diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder. Identify severity of symptoms as identified in the DSM and ASAM dimensions.

Slide 7: Process Disorder: The client expressed concern about gambling due to his scratch off tickets.
List any symptoms from the current edition of the DSM relevant to a gambling disorder or other process addiction as related to Jed’s case.

Part 3 – Treatment PlanningSlide 8: Strengths: List five specific strengths you notice about your client.
Describe why a strengths-based approach may be beneficial for treating
substance use disorder. Why is identifying specific strengths for clients experiencing substance use disorders important?

Slide 9: Treatment Interventions: Identify three short-term goals (next 3-6 months) and one long-term goal you believe the client may want to accomplish. Identify possible treatment intervention for each goal.

Slide 10: Coping: List at least five coping skills or strategies the client can use to manage stress and/or cravings, include at least one that has a faith-based perspective. Describe why coping skills for stress and cravings is important. Identify why coping skills presented may be effective.

Part 4 – Cultural ConsiderationsSlide 11: Cultural Considerations and Bias: Considering the history of addiction disorders as a perception of being a moral problem and the many consequences associated with addiction, bias of the counselor and others is often present.
Consider the history of substance abuse treatment in the United States over the past 100 years. How did the early practices differ from what is being done today? Use the slide to explain how early treatment approaches and moral considerations may still influence bias and judgment today. List at least five cultural considerations and biases that may be present working with Jed.
