Impact of Tobacco Advertising on Adolescent Smoking Behavior

The introduction is the paper's first paragraph (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020). Notice that the complete title of the document is not bolded and is repeated at the top center of page two, exactly as stated on the title page. After indenting the paragraph by .5 inches, begin the content of your paper. The entire paper will be double-spaced, including the References page. Be careful not to include extra spaces between paragraphs. Notice the page header on page two (and all subsequent pages of the document) is slightly different than that on page one as it does not include the words Running head and colon. Notice that your references on the next page are in alphabetical order.

You can easily replace the information on this page with your own information. This will ensure that your paper is properly formatted. Please also replace the headings to identify the specific headings that align with your assignment. Do not forget to include adequate in-text citations throughout your paper.

Using Level Headings in Your Paper (This is a level one)

Headings are an excellent way to organize the content of your paper and clarify the flow of information for the reader. The heading above is a Level I heading; thus, it is centered and bolded. Many papers that you submit in the HSA program would benefit from the use of headings. Since the majority of the papers that you will write will be between 500 and 1500 words, you will generally use only levels I – III.

Level Two (This is a level two)

Shorter papers may require only a Level I heading, whereas using three levels of headings may be appropriate for a longer paper. You do not need to use every level of heading in your papers! Be sure to review the next section on the use of in-text citations. There will be valuable insight into the different types of citations you can use in your paper.

Using In-Text Citations

When paraphrasing or quoting a source, writers must credit the course with an in-text citation and a reference (APA, 2020). In-text citations go in the body of the paper; they tell the reader where the information came from. Each time the source changes, a new citation is needed.

Paraphrases are cited in-text with the author and year (APA, 2020). When paraphrasing one source for multiple consecutive sentences, writers should cite it in the first sentence of the paraphrase. If the source is still paraphrased in the next paragraph, it will be cited again.

In-text citations for direct quotes include the author, year, and page number (APA, 2020). The paragraph number can be used if the source does not have pages. Direct quotes include the source’s exact words in quotation marks. It is important to note that “direct quotations must be accurate” (APA, 2020, p.274). For more information about citations, please see the APA guideline for the 7th edition.

You can use a narrative citation or a parenthetical citation. A narrative citation shapes the title or author's name and date into the sentence. On the other hand, the parenthetical citation offers information at the end of the sentence (APA, 2020). You may also elect to write the full term in the sentence by stating the American Psychological Association provides valuable resources on citations. Avoid leaving the heading at the bottom of the page, but if it does happen, it is okay.

Conclusion/Summary

APA Style helps writers stay consistent as they format their papers and cite their sources. By practicing, revising, and looking at examples, writers can learn and apply the details of APA. Most BAS-HSA papers will require a summary or a conclusion.

The following section should begin on its own page, and that is for reference. Do not use any other name but reference. Not sources citations or works cited.
