BIO 183

Effect of Body Position on Heart Rate (HR)

Analysis and Lab Write-up:

1. Enter the class spread-sheet onto EXEL or similar spreadsheet program

2. From these data, you will calculate THE MEAN OF EACH COLUMN

3. Determine the mean class HRs for the Supine, Standing, and Sitting

a. graph these data (bar graph; 3 bars; HR units are beats per minute).

When you stand up, gravity pulls your blood downwards and causes a decrease in blood pressure in your head. This decrease in blood pressure activates the BARORECEPTOR REFLEX, which increases Heart Rate as part of a mechanism to increase blood presssure back to normal.

4. Make a drawing of the BARORECEPTOR REFLEX, which includes (do not cut-and-paste a drawing from the internet):

a. the baroreceptors (what are they? Where are they located? How do they sense blood pressure?)

b. the nerves from the baroreceptors to the brain

c. the brain

d. the nerves from the brain to the heart

e. the heart

5. Describe, using Bullet-Points, why standing up results in an increase in Heart Rate. Be sure to include all of the components of Question 4 (a, b, c, d, e).
