PHE 500 Module Two Small Group Discussion Guidelines and Rubric Overview: For this small group discussion in Module Two , you will be broken up into small groups of four to five students. Your instructor will assign one of the following articles (from the Module Two resources) about theoretical frameworks and public health models to each group member:  Article: Life Course Epidemiology  Article: Developmental Origins of Metabolic Disease: Life Course and Intergenerational Perspectives  Article: A Conceptual Framework for Action on the Social Determinants of Health (Read executive summary only )  Article: How Early Experiences Get Into the Body: A Biodevelopmental Framework (Be sure to scroll down and click on the link that allows you to download a “fl ip chart” (PDF) of this feature)  Article: A Framework for Public Health Action in the United States For your initial post, you should summarize the article for your group members. What framework was discussed in the article? What did you learn? How is this framework important in pu blic health? What factors that influence health or health behaviors were discussed? What is the importance of these factors w hen designing public health programs? You may need to do some additional outside research. Whe n responding to your classmates, you should evaluate their summaries. How are the frameworks or models that they summarized similar or different to the framework or model that you summ arized? What health factors or behaviors did they identify that you had not considered? Your active particip ation in the discussion forums is essential to your overall success this term. Discussion questions are designed to help you make meaningful connections between the course content and the larger concepts and goals of the course. These discussions offer you the opportunity to express your own thoughts, ask questions for clarification, and gain insight from your classmates’ responses and instructor’s guidance. Requirements for Discussion Board Assignments Students are required to post one (1) initial post an d to follow up with at least two (2) response posts for each discussion board assignment. For your initial post (1), you must do the following:  Compose a post of one to two paragraphs .  Complete the initial post by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. Eastern T ime of th e module week.  Take into consideration material such as course content and other discussion boards from the current module and previous modules, when appropriate. For your response posts (2), you must do the following:  Reply to at least two different clas smates outside of your own initial post thread.  Complete the two response posts by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Eastern T ime.  Demonstrate more depth and thought than simply stating “I agree” or “You are wrong.” Guidance is provided for you in each discussion promp t. When responding to the discussion question, please use the terms, concepts, and theories that are in your readings, lectures, videos, and other course materials. Please do the same when commenting on your peers' responses. To help internalize the cours e content and to become more comfortable with it, it is important to have meaningful conversations with your peers and instructor. This does not mean that you simply give your opinion when respo nding to the discussion question. You should provide thoughtfu l responses using the course content to support your statements.
