From

No unread replies.5 replies.

The group discussion forum is a space for you to collaborate with your group as you work towards the various deliverables for the Requirements Document assignment. To help guide your group discussion this week, please read the instructions below.

Details

As soon as possible after the class meeting, please participate in this discussion forum to continue working on Part I of the Requirements Document project.

Your group should use this discussion forum to discuss 1) revisions you plan to make to the draft as a result of feedback and what you learned in this module, 2) how you plan to implement the revisions, and 3) how you plan to draft the remaining components of the business section. Make your initial post early so that you have time to comment on each other’s posts and develop a plan for the final draft before the end of the module. The earlier you make your initial post, the more time you will have for group conversations. You must make at least two posts by the due date.

Assessment Criteria

  • Timely completion (1 point per post for up to 2 points)

  • Quality of contributions—Were your contributions relevant? Did they help advance the project toward completion by asking a key question, addressing and/or satisfying open issues, expressing a key thought, or contributing content and detail to satisfy a requirement? (Up to 3 points)

Hi all, just wondering how I might be able to work on this assignment this morning (taking advantage of being snowed in)?  I believe we have two different drafts -- the one that Jaya submitted and the one that Don prepared.  Don, I just left you a voicemail.  Are you working to merge the two documents this morning in advance of our 3pm discussion on bigbluebutton?  And what, if anything, could I do over the next 4 hours to help?  Please share your thoughts. Thx!

Hi again,

Good talking to everyone earlier today.  So just to review our next steps:

1) Don will take first crack at merging Jaya's draft (submitted the other night) and the one that Don prepared separately

2) once merged, Don said that he will share the combined document with the rest of us (tonight or tomorrow morning?)  Presumably, it will exceed the 4 page limit for this assignment and so one of us (any volunteers? if not, I'd be happy to do it) will want to make a few basic edits -- e.g. remove the train photo that's on every page right now, reduce the amount of unnecessary white space, change the line spacing from 2 to 1.5 or 1, perhaps change the font and font size, etc.

3) once these cosmetic edits are complete (which shouldn't take long at all), that person will then share the revised document again with the group.

4) now the real editing will begin.  I'm happy to take the first crack to try to make it flow better.  Depending on how much space we have after it has been cut down a bit more, we will want to add more information and quotes from the readings (hopefully as everyone is reading, they are finding and writing down material that might be relevant for our document -- so this part shouldn't be too hard) and address the comments that the professor made (i.e. add description of data on page 4 using 2 column chart with "source" and "description" as the column headings.  Also, discuss the relevant "Vs" under the "description" heading)

5) circulate the document a few more times to polish it up and (in my opinion) finish with Don doing a final review (on Monday?) and submitting it when he feels it is ready.  Ending with Don this time makes sense to me because he obviously knows the most about this subject.  Does this sound ok, Don?

And that's it.  Please share any thoughts, questions, or concerns.  Thanks!

John

This is Mark Ritzmann's assessment of our first draft:

"Great paper.  Nice work
One suggestion in order to make it a little easier for the Tech team to understand - on p4, "Anticipated Data Sources" can you add a description of the data ?  Perhaps make a 2-column chart with "source" and "description" as the column headings.

For description, maybe address the 7V's or the appropriate subset of Vs."

Please, let us keep the effort within the scope of the assignment. Mark is happy with our draft. It just needs a little tweaking. We need to make sure we are prepared to handle the Business Document that we will receive to work on next week.

PS... I like the images. They set the theme.

Here is the latest draft... I think Mark was pretty happy with our last version. This addresses the footnotes, and Mark's comments. I think if we check it off against the requirements document, edit for errors or clarity, we should be able to move onto planning our presentation planning. Business Case - APAN5400.dft2-2..docx

Presentation Assignment:

Work with your group to develop a five-minute executive summary presentation of your business requirements section. Your executive summary should touch on every aspect of the project—a full round trip. You should include status updates and identify key questions or concerns. You should approach the presentation as though it is an update to senior management. The presentation may use slides or other visuals as determined by your group. (If you choose to use visuals, please see the next page in the module for how to submit your file(s).)

After you finish your presentation, you will receive feedback and questions from your classmates and instructor. Be prepared to answer questions and defend your business requirements.

Every member of your group is required to contribute to the presentation. It is up to your group how its members contribute.

We encourage you to take advantage of the tools in your group’s dedicated workspace (e.g., BigBlueButton, Google Docs) to develop the presentation. To access the workspace, click Groups in the left global navigation and then select your group from the list.

Assessment Criteria

        • Communication of key elements (up to 3 points): Your group brought the paper to life by highlighting the key elements.

        • Logical flow (up to 4 points): Your group illustrated the logical flow from purpose to description to success criteria.

        • Response to feedback (up to 3 points): Your group was able to answer questions, respond to feedback, and defend your proposal.

A presentation that deserves full points conveys the importance of the opportunity/problem, flows to a well-rounded description of the solution, and then links logically to measurable success criteria. Your team is able to respond to comments and feedback from the instructor and fellow students and, in general, defend your proposal.

Ok, I did a more careful read of Don's latest draft.  Here are some thoughts and questions:

General:

- in terms of the 7 Vs, it appears that "veracity" is the biggest problem as it relates to rail safety due to the current lack of automation.  Is this correct?  And would "volume" be the second most problematic V? You write that availability isn't a problem but you also talk about a "system of trackside and onboard sensors that provides tens of millions of distinct data points each day," which might suggest that an overabundance of data might pose a challenge?  You also mention under "objectives" the need to improve "velocity" (might that be the 3rd most challenging V?) and to "provide a platform for visualization" (4th V) Meanwhile, it doesn't appear that "variety" and "variability" of data is much of a problem -- right?  And what shall we make of "value" -- does anyone have any thoughts on that V?

- we need more quotes from the readings.  I see you have incorporated 2 from my previous post, but I think we need more.  I can try to fit others from my post, or look for more -- but have other team members found some good ones?

- I'm not sure what you mean by "283 billion Revenue ton-miles" on page 1

- I have found some minor errors which I can fix later (e.g. capitalize "Twitter," fix a few typos, etc.

That's it for now.  Again, nice work, Don!  Do others have feedback to share?
