Beginning with a blank document – Basic info:

  1. Type in your “Main Idea”


  1. With the “Main Idea” box selected, move cursor to area where you’d like the second box. While holding “Ctrl”, click mouse.

  1. To add line words, move cursor to point at line & click. Move cursor inside text box, click and type.

    1. Move text box up/down line by click/dragging on black dot.

  1. Continue to add information boxes and line words.

    1. Don’t worry about neatness yet… just connections!

    2. If connecting line attaches to wrong spot, select box, click on arrow head (or base) and drag to any of the other boxes.

    3. When adding boxes, be sure starting box is selected.

To change color and style of symbols:

  1. Edit  Select  Symbols

    1. Effect  Fill Color  white

    2. Effect  line color  black

  1. Explore shape libraries (change to desired shape)


  1. Edit  Select  Links

    1. Effect  line color  black

  1. To adjust font size:

    1. Edit  Select  symbols

    2. Text  Size

  1. Bottom left of Screen are “Zoom” buttons. Zoom out to see all symbols.

To clean up alignment of symbols: **Important to do in order!**

  1. Begin in lower left corner

  1. Align vertical elements.

    1. Effect  align  vertical centers

    2. To create a “group”: hold down “Ctrl & g”

  1. Align horizontal groups

    1. Effect  align  tops

    2. Effect  Evenly Space  Horizontal

    3. “Ctrl & g” to create a group

  1. Align main category groups

    1. Effect  align  tops

    2. “Ctrl & g” to create a group

Final touches… and tweaking.

  1. Make sure lines attach to boxes where you’d like them.

  1. Resize boxes if necessary.

  2. When you hold it at arm’s length, you should be able to see the structure! (This is a tool to provide organization to ides!)

Student copies

  1. Edit  select  symbols

    1. Text  color  white

Regular outline form

  1. Below tool bar in the top left corner, click on “I.A. Outline”

    1. Look through outline and clean up, if necessary.
