COPE (Creating Opportunities for Parent Empowerment) NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Program This program depicts a logic model and theory of change by targeting on the multiple populations. It empowers parents and nurses to protect infants to enhance their physical and cognitive development. Describing the Program ● The social aspects that influenced development of the program aimed at teaching parents the manner in which they could relate with their preterm infants. This was vital in ensuring that such children were granted good care in a social surrounding. Political factors that lead to creation of this program were reflected through educational activities resulting to achievement of goals. Economically, this initiative was started to enhance active participation of insurance companies and to allow payment of taxes to support it. The organizational aspects were enforced to ensure that parents create good relationships with their premature infants. This is through finding appropriate ways of handling stress that come along the process. ● The community assessment information that contributed to the documentation of this initiative were from stakeholders. They included the parents, nurses and infants. ● Based on literature perspective, epidemiological information that supports this program depends on the cognitive growth of a preterm infant. The literature review is as follows; ● Literature Review The health problem that affects this population concerns infants who are subjected to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This involves giving care to babies during the first month after they are born with medical conditions such as low weight. Focusing on factors such as the development among infants, the major objective of COPE initiative was to aid parents to handle stress when taking care of these children. The outcome of this program was to reduce conditions such as heart disease among the infants. Evidently, this literature review creates chances which empowers parents to deal with the outcome that affect their infants. Focusing on the incidence that applies to this program such as low birth weight, this condition happens when parents give birth to premature infants. In this regard, COPE initiatives offers education to such parents to alleviate their levels of stress while raising the children. Study reveals that mothers showed low levels of anxiety after completing the COPE initiative. The prevalence of this research was to measure how parents were involved in the program and those who did not participate. This is by relating to how they coped with the outcome of the situation. Apparently, parents who were subjected to the COPE educational plan felt reduction in anxiety, fatigue, tension and depression. This was in contrast to their counterparts who failed to participate in the initiative. The distribution of this disease was different at the local level because it could not create negative outcome on mothers. This further lead to creation of an environment at home whereby mothers were less effected and increased their confidence in taking care of their infants. Nationally, the distribution of this disease could be fully implemented by focusing on home visits. This research was left for future implementation to demonstrate effectiveness of the initiative in developing trust with stake holders such as parents. ● Factors that support the development of COPE program were the urge to reduce anxiety among parents with preterm newborns. Other factors include creation of awareness through educational training that became sponsored by stakeholders of the organization. The mission of the firm was to ensure that COPE plan reduced stress levels among parents with premature infants. Another mission of the organization was to familiarize parents with NICU plan to make them comfortable when taking care of their infants. Additionally, the mission of this plan was to ensure that parents interact well with children to foster their physical and cognitive growth. The structure of this organization was composed of treatment equipment for infants and training sessions for parents. The available resources to support the initiative came from insurance firms, tax payers and stake holders who were part of the initiative. ● The stakeholders in this program are the infants who are receiving the treatment and their parents. Nurses are also part of the initiative because they offer treatment and care to the infants. Other stakeholders include tax payers and insurance firms because they benefits the hospital by contributing funds. Evaluation Questions/Design Program Characteristics ● The population that is being served or benefits from this program are infants who are one months old and below. This program caters for infants of both gender and is also aimed at finding out effectiveness of COPE whereby Iran is the residence location. Socio economic groups that participated in this initiatives included tax payers. They supported it by contributing funds to help the infants. Language was not specific because the newborns could not yet communicate. Other relevant traits among the population that is being served are that, the infants have to be born with less weight to be catered under this program. ● The characteristics of this program is the focus on the prematurity, and low weight among the infants ● The goals of this program are to reduce stress levels among parents with premature infants. Another objective of the initiative is to familiarize parents with NICU plan to make them comfortable while they take care of their infants. Furthermore, this plan creates a good relationships between parents and their infants to facilitate their physical and cognitive growth. The improved health condition that this program aim to accomplish is to cater for premature children with less weight. This is by protecting them from medical conditions such as heart diseases. ● This initiative address objectives that are aimed at reducing anxiety among parents with preterm newborns. The program focuses on preventing situations whereby infants could develop health complications due to prematurity.
