This is a hand held espresso machine. A single serve device targeted at a new market space, travelers, people on the go and small households. It is portable coffee device and it is in a world of its own. Handpresso combined coffee quality and mobility (Nielsen & Petitdemange, 2013). It is now made possible to drink a premium quality coffee, wherever you are. The handpresso elements are:

Innovation

Handpresso continuously develops new solutions to make it possible for you to always drink a genuine espresso or a tasty coffee where no one thought it would be possible before.

Simplicity

Simplicity is at the central part of the Handpresso concept. They keep it simple in designs; attractive portable machines are also very simple and easy to use while making yourself some coffee regardless of where you are (Nielsen & Petitdemange, 2013).

Mobility

Handpresso allows you to leave the office or your kitchen and still enjoy some good coffee when you are travelling, during that moment you are away on a weekend or for a holiday or during your leisure time.

Quality

The handpresso coffee break is higher than expectations. Thanks to the 16 bar pressure, the handpresso produces quality creamy top espresso anywhere you like (Nielsen & Petitdemange, 2013). The handcoffee auto machine enables you to prepare great 80 to 110 ml coffees in the car. This means you can always have a quality coffee. Handpresso device is very affordable since it only costs $59.

Nespresso and Sara Lee as partners they did not give a concrete reason why they were not interested to complete the development. They both liked the portability of the product and how simple it was (Vallières, 2013). I assume that the concept was too far from their core business focus. Nespresso made some comments about controlling the temperature of the water. The engineers did not know how they could gurantee the client to use water at 90°c to ensure a good espresso. They did not jump into the opportunity because they knew there was no other product in the pipeline that mirrored their innovation.

Handpresso was a good idea and Nielsen would have captured the value from it by getting the feedback on the product. At this stage Illy had developed ESE format that they thought it was a great idea to consult them. They help Nielsen to optimize the combination process and also showed the the opportunity to use their ESE pod (Vallières, 2013). Nielsen had an option of getting partner that will invest and help run the business, bringing complementary skills to those of the existing team.
