Research Proposal

Research Topic: Economy can affect crime go to reduce?

Increase and decrease in the rate of crime is dependent on many factors varying from social to sometimes even political. However, in this research proposal, the primary variable that will be discussed crime is the economic aspect. Therefore, the research question is; can economy reduce the rate of offenses? The relationship between crime and economy is important as they impact on one another in either a positive or a negative way. Crime is a significant part of any economy, and with its prevalence, the economy is affected (Powell, Manish & Nair, 2010). This question is also relevant as it is a contemporary issue that affects everyone in one way or another.

In this instance, as reference above, the economy is the primary dependent variable that is being analyzed. For the research, it will take an in-depth analysis of factors in the economy that foster or encourage the increase in crime and vice versa. The study would involve two different scenarios so as to come with a definitive interpretation and results. That is, one scenario would be analyzing a state or country that has a relatively well-doing economy and relate this to the rate of crime in the area. The other scenario would be looking at a state that is undergoing economic crises and measures the speed of offense. Researching on both cases would help determine if the commercial aspect of a community can affect the crime rate.

The particular hypothesis being tested in this research proposal would be how can the rate of crime in society taking into consideration all the other variables involved. They key independent variables, is income. Other variables are police number, education background and social welfare and so on. All these factors mentioned playing a significant role in either reducing or increasing the rate of crime. In the case of the economy, consider a case where a state is experiencing a crisis in the economy, this could have meant that most of the population could be unemployed and lack ways to provide for themselves and their families. As a result, some of the people could lead to crime as a means to get financial incentives. The number of police patrolling an area also has an effect on the crime rate, that is, with a relatively large number of the police force, the rate of crime will be low. The education level can affect in crime. This question relates to the research proposal as it is one of the variables that is determined or influences the rate of offense. In this case, analysis of individuals with different level of education is essential (Hjalmarsson & Lochner, 2012). Different spots or cities in a state have various levels of crime depending on the background of the community in question. Social issues such as the pressure to become productive especially when one is a professional are also factors that affect crime and which will be analyzed.

An important variable and which can be used as a control in the research is the wages or salaries of individuals in the state under study. This is because crime does not only occur for the unemployed but also in the employment case. This is known as white collar crimes and is committed by professionals.

The equation is of the form on the below:

+ei

This mathematical equation have consideration all the variables that affect crime with the control factor. This research project mainly relates to a peer-review article written by Goulas & Zervoyianni, (2013) because they both elaborate on the interaction between crime and the economy.
