Initiative

Initiative: The power or opportunities to act or take charge before others do .

In today ’s society showing initiative on the job will demonstrate strong character skills. I work

for a retirement community and many of the people who reside are independent, but some of

them require minimum assistance. One day I was sitting at the nurse station when a family

member s tarted to complain about her mo ther not receiving a show er within the past week . I

asked her for her mother first and last name and room number , once I had this information I was

able to puller Mrs. Applebee, chart to verify in the nurse ’s notes why the showers were not

given. Mrs. Applebee had refused shower on her scheduled shower days. I offered to assist Mrs.

Applebee, with a showe r e ven though she was not my assigned residents to care for. I also asked

Mrs. Smith daughter if she would like to be notified when her mother refuse ’s a shower.

None less, one Monday, morning Mrs. Applebee daughter contacted my immediate supervisor to

explain the situation and how pleased she was with the quality of care her mother had received

by me . Too my surprise I received a bonus for showing initiative. Equally important I will

describe a nother incident on t he job which I gained merit for. Mr . Thomas had a medication

change that went from 2 600 mg mucinex tablets by mouth once daily to 1 1200mg muc inex

tablet by mouth onc e d aily. Mr. Thomas complain ed for 24 hours about his nasal passage being

dry. I took the initiative to check the medication package against the prescription order , and was abl e to find correct the error in Quick Mar. The n I explained to Mr. Thomas what the problem

was and I also, let him know it was corrected.
