Assessment 16: Intuitive Ability

My intuitive score was a 7. I actually felt my score would be higher but this is actually a pretty good score considering I work for a heavily regulated industry where there has to be a strong balance of policy, procedure, innovation, and creativity. “Going with my gut” is not as important as following the rules but having a strong sense of intuition does help. Although data is important, some of the best strategies developed for my territory have been based on my intuition. I definitely consider my intuitive skills an asset. It’s not only been valuable professionally but personally as well. Much of my decision making process is based on intuition. I’ve never regretted a decision that I’ve made when I had all of the facts and needed to choose based on my intuition. I know I made the best possible choice at that moment based on all of the resources I was given.

Assessment 17: Decision-Making Biases

Question one I actually answered “a”. I think this was partially due to my biases from frequent travel. I drive a lot on a daily basis due to my job and I fly as well, although not as often. Flying has so many less external variables to cause an accident so it was an easy pick for me.

Question two is a classic availability heuristic question and I fell into the trap. I definitely thought of all the words that started with “R” and had “R” as the third letter and felt there had to be more words in the English dictionary that started with the letter “R”.

Question three I felt that Mark would take a job in the management of the Arts. I pondered about this question because I felt most people getting an MBA are usually going to go for a job in Management Consulting. However, Mark’s interest in music was the dominant factor that made me choose answer “a”. Although one career path is typical, I felt he would still choose a job that peaked his greater interest.

Question four I answered “B”. I felt that the performance of the preceding sales directors had no bearing on whether the fifth would be a good sales director or not. I knew this dealt with the representativeness heuristic because the odds were based on the stereotypes of the preceding sales managers.

Question five was a tricky one for me. I knew that it was dealing with the anchoring and adjustment heuristic since I was dealing with a value. However, I guess I subconsciously used the Chemist stated value as the anchor. I naturally felt my decision was based off of my knowledge of engineers’ average income. I’ve always considered engineers highly intelligent and valued occupations in the job market.
