This article explains the importance of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in respect to Hungary’s elected seat. The article describes human rights as the most important intergovernmental bodies. As the article suggests, Hungary is expected to “take action in the interest of human rights and democracy throughout the world, and also to ensure that the world acquires an accurate image of the country." I will use this source to explain the tasks that Hungary is expected to perform in their serving term regarding human rights.

Gall, L. (2016). “Human Rights Begin At Home, Hungary.” Election Onto UN Human Rights Council Chance To Improve Record. Human Rights Watch. Retrieved from https://www.hrw.org/news/2016/11/02/human-rights-begin-home-hungary

In this article, Gall describes the reasons as to why people should be concerned about the situation of human rights in Hungary. According to the article, the election of Hungary presents a great chance for its government to clean up its own human rights record. This will also allow other governmental bodies to scrutinize Hungary more closely. I will use this source to highlight the importance of Hungary in the UNRC seat.

Eskaf, M. (2016). Russia lost membership of UN human rights council over Syria crimes. Retrieved from https://www.middleeastobserver.org/2016/10/29/russia-lost-membership-of-un-human-rights-council-over-syria-crimes/

According to this article, Russia lost UNRHC membership due to its accusation of war crimes with Syria. Despite its exposure to international diplomacy, Russia was still unable to fight for the seat successfully. This source will help me support my argument on why Russia is not the best for the nominated position.

Orozobekova, C. (2016). Russia Loses Seat at the UN Human Rights Council. Retrieved from http://thediplomat.com/2016/10/russia-loses-seat-at-the-un-human-rights-council/

The author explains the reason as to why Russia lost their seat at the UNHRC during the elections. As per the article, Russia was yearning to retain their position, but they failed because the vote was a small but symbolic victory for the international community. This sent a clear message that countries which commit human rights atrocities have no moral right to be in the UNHRC. I will use this source to explain what is required to best fit as a UNHRC member.

Spohr, M. (2010). United Nations Human Rights Council, Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law, 14, 169-218. Retrieved from www.mpil.de/files/pdf3/mpunyb_05_spohr_14.pdf

The author describes the development of HRC within the first years after the foundation. The article suggests that HRC has completed its institutional building phase and but with a lot of challenges. I will use this source to examine the achievements and importance of being a UNHRC member.
