  • Definition: is an adhesive chemical substance that bond wood segments together.

Each wood glue product has its own unique chemical formulation. However, most wood glue products share essential chemical components that can be found in any product. According to Ince, S. D. (2010, April 18), The main components of typical wood glue product are: Polymer, Homologues, Isomers, Urethane Prepolymer, Diphenylmethane-diisocyanate, water, Formaldehyde*, Polyvinyl acetate emulsion.

  • Formaldehyde (HCHO): according to EPA, Formaldehyde Is an organic airborne chemical that has strong smell and effect human health. Formaldehyde is classified according to the world health organization (WHO) as pollutant chemical as shown in Table1. Assignment 1

In addition, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) also classified Formaldehyde as carcinogenic to human as shown in the tables below. Assignment 2Assignment 3


  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emission from wood glue:


  • Possible Solutions:

  1. Mechanical fasteners instead of glue.

  2. low (VOC) emitting glue product.
