Grading Criteria – Writing Assignments

A

  • Student clearly understands the nature of the assignment and has completed all parts of it. All directions are followed.

  • Student demonstrates exceptional understanding of the assigned instructional materials (e.g., assigned readings).

  • An appropriate and interesting introduction and conclusion are present.

  • Student's paper is well organized and flows logically. Paragraphs are linked by well-crafted transitional sentences.

  • An abundance of details and specific examples are used to support student's argument.

  • The paper is written entirely or nearly entirely in the student's own words. Well paraphrased. If quotations are present, all are apt, few, short, and appropriately incorporated into the surrounding text. All quoted material is placed in quotation marks.

  • If citations are necessary, all are present and correct. All citations are in correct MLA format. All works referenced in in-text citations appear on the Works Cited page.

  • A Works Cited page, if needed, is present and done in correct MLA format. All sources listed on the Works Cited page are present in in-text citations.

  • If a specific number of sources was specified for the assignment, more than the required number of sources is used.

  • Paper is very well written with no major grammatical, syntax, punctuation, or spelling errors and few or no minor ones. Language is interesting, engaging, and easy to read and understand.

  • Paper is of the appropriate length and has no format errors.

B

  • Student clearly understands the nature of the assignment and has completed all parts of it. All directions are followed.

  • Student demonstrates understanding of the assigned instructional materials (e.g., assigned readings).

  • An appropriate introduction and conclusion are present.

  • Student's paper is well organized and flows logically. Paragraphs are linked by transitional sentences.

  • Sufficient details and specific examples are used to support student's argument.

  • The paper is written largely in the student's own words. Correctly paraphrased. For the most part, quotations are apt, few, short, and appropriately incorporated into the surrounding text. All quoted material is placed in quotation marks.

  • If citations are necessary, all are present and correct. All citations are in MLA format with minor errors. All works referenced in in-text citations appear on the Works Cited page.

  • A Works Cited page, if needed, is present and done in correct MLA format with minor errors. All sources listed on the Works Cited page are present in in-text citations.

  • If a specific number of sources was specified for the assignment, the required number of sources is used.

  • Paper is very well written with no major grammatical, syntax, punctuation, or spelling errors but some minor ones. Language is easy to read and undestand.

  • Paper is of the appropriate length and has no format errors.

C

  • Student understands the nature of the assignment and has completed nearly all parts of it. Most directions are followed.

  • Student demonstrates some understanding of the assigned instructional materials (e.g., assigned readings).

  • A introduction and conclusion are present but are either too short or too long or do not adequately reflect the contents of the paper. 

  • Student's paper is well organized for the most part. Paper does not always flow logically. Paragraphs are for the most part not linked by transitional sentences.

  • Some details and specific examples are used to suuport student's argument.

  • More than half the paper is written in the student's own words. Awkward paraphrasing. Quotations are unnecessary, too many, too long, or are not  appropriately incorporated into the surrounding text. All quoted material is placed in quotation marks.

  • If citations are necessary, the majority are present and correct. Citations are in MLA format but contain errors. All works referenced in in-text citations appear on the Works Cited page.

  • A Works Cited page, if needed, is present and done in MLA format with errors. Nearly all sources listed on the Works Cited page are present in in-text citations.

  • If a specific number of sources was specified for the assignment, the required number of sources was used.

  • Paper is acceptably written. No more than three major grammatical, syntax, punctuation, or spelling errors. Numerous minor errors. The paper is easy to read for the most part. Unclear in one or two places.

  • Paper is somewhat shorter than required or contains some format errors.

D

  • Student seems not to understand the nature of the assignment and/or has not completed most of it. Directions are not followed.

  • Student demonstrates limited understanding of the assigned instructional materials (e.g., assigned readings).

  • Either an introduction or a conclusion (but not both) is present. The introduction/conclusion is either too brief or too long and does not adequately reflect the contents of the paper.

  • Student's paper is poorly organized and occasionally incoherent. The paper is not divided into paragraphs. 

  • Few details and specific examples are used to support the student's argument.

  • The paper is written largely in someone else's words. Incorrect paraphrasing. Paper consists largely of quotations. Quotations are not incorporated into the surrounding text. All quoted material is placed in quotation marks.

  • If citations are necessary, they are largely absent and/or incorrect. Student attempts to use correct MLA format for citations. Some citations to paginated sources lack page numbers. Not all sources referenced in in-text citations appear on the Works Cited page.

  • A Works Cited page, if needed, is present but is done in incorrect MLA format. Not all sources listed on the Works Cited page are present in in-text citations.

  • If a specific number of sources was specified for the assignment, fewer than the required number of sources was used.

  • Paper is poorly written with numerous grammatical, syntax, punctuation, or spelling errors both major an minor. Paper is often incoherent and difficult to read. 

  • Paper is too short and contains format errors.

F

  • Student does not understand the nature of the assignment. Several parts of the assignment have not been completed. Directions are largely ignored. The paper is written on an unassigned topic. 

  • Student demonstrates little or no understanding of the assigned instructional materials (e.g., assigned readings).

  • Neither an introduction nor a conclusion is present.

  • Student's paper is disorganized. There is no underlying logical structure to the paper. 

  • Few or no details or specific examples are used to support the student's argument. Fictitious examples are used to support the student's argument.

  • The paper is written largely or entirely in someone else's words. Incorrect paraphrasing throughout. The paper consists almost entirely of quotations. One quotation or piece of quoted language is not placed in quotation marks but is accompanied by an accurate citation. 

  • If citations are necessary, they are largely missing and/or incorrect. Citations are not done in MLA format. Citations to paginated sources do not contain page numbers. More than one work referenced in in-text citations does not appear on the Works Cited page.

  • A Works Cited page, if needed, is not present. If a Works Cited page is present, more than one of the sources listed on the Works Cited page does not appear in in-text citations.

  • Few sources were used in writing the paper. Paper relies on sources that the student was explicitly told not to use.

  • Paper is largely incomprehensible are a result of numerous major grammatical erros.

  • Paper is less than half the required length. 

The following papers will receive a 0 and may not be rewritten or made up in any way:

  • Papers without citations will receive a 0.

  • Papers containing inaccurate citations that do not indicate the true source of the information will receive a 0.

  • Papers containing plagiarism (as little as one sentence) will receive a 0. Students may be dropped from the course with a WF or a W and reported to the Office of Student Conduct.

  • Papers written in whole or in part by someone other than the student will receive a 0,and the student may be dropped from the course with a WF or W and reported to the Office of Student Conduct.

  • Papers submitted for credit in other classes will receive a 0, and the student will be dropped from the course with a WF or a W and reported to the Office of Student Conduct.

It is your responsibility to understand and abide by the rules regarding academic honesty at Johnson & Wales University. See the statement on plagiarism and academic dishonesty on the course syllabus and in the JWU student handbook. It is your responsibility to learn what plagiarism consists of and to refrain from plagiarizing. Ignorance of the rules is no excuse. Ignorance of what constitutes plagiarism is no excuse.
