Integration Transport Outline
This outline provides a detailed review of business plan of my final project. The details will be in reference to the warehousing and distribution process of a popular consumer electronics firm selling personal computers, tablets, and cell phones, which can support global business expansion, particularly in China and the EU. A number of aspects will be addressed here for a company that will be importing goods from the US into these areas.
Part I: Transportation Regulations and Policies
Define the goal
I will define the goal of transportation regulations and policies of the company so as to ensure effective decision making regarding resource allocation.
Explain the relevance
I will define the efficient methods of transport in countries that the business intends to expand so as to deliver products to these regions more efficiently. These will include strategic locations of warehouses.
National security
I will look into the policies that have been put in China and the EU member states so as to ensure control over national borders and space. These policies will include the Interstate Highway Act of 1956 of the United States of America, as well as those of The EU and China.
Public safety
I will examine matters of public safety, which have over the time resulted in policies development. This will particularly focus on policies aimed at controlling accidents that occur in various modes of transportation.
Environment
This will examine the most recent environmental control measures and standards that have been instituted to respond to the increasing transport environmental impacts. As an example, mandating catalytic converters and banning of leaded gasoline in automobiles.
Unrestrained competition
This part will acknowledge the role of transport policy in preventing monopoly of different modes of transport. In particular, it will examine the presence of unrestrained competition, which has resulted in market dominance, in the EU and China. Because of the many issues brought by such dominance, this part will discuss the several issues that impact on public interests, such as price, availability, and access.
Part II: Transportation Methodologies
Economic viability
Because of the various modes of transport that the company will use in moving goods from the US to the EU and China, this area will extensively investigate the economic viability of these modes, air and ship, so that it reaches on which mode can be used under what concepts.
Practical use
Here, I will examine what mode of transportation will be used in shipping the different products that our company will be dealing in. A number of factors will examined, such as the level of risk, speed, and time. In doing so, the benefits as well as the drawbacks of each mode will be explained in detail.
Applications in domestic and global markets
Over the recent years, a number of globalization has had impacts in regards to the context under which transport policy occurs. For example, it has increased interactions for both passengers and freight at domestic and international level. As a result, this has led to the emergence of major actors that manage a portfolio of infrastructures and modes across the international jurisdictions. Thus, dealing with many transport policies. I will therefore use both the global and domestic markets as far as the transport policy is concerned.
Part III: Warehousing and Distribution
Principles
Here, I will highlight the key basic principles, which are applicable to warehousing. These will be compiled from materials handling companies and literature review.
Design
With improper design and layout of the warehouse, there will be capacity issues, storage inadequacies, and decreased productivity. Thus, this part will describe the key design principles to ensure effective distribution.
Storage and handling
I will extensively describe the storage and handling of products so that the number of cases of occupational ill health and injuries are reduced significantly. It will contain simple rules, which should be applicable to the business.
Information systems and information technology
I will elaborate on the technology solutions delivering positive results in areas of return on investment, quality, and safety aimed at responding to consumers’ needs.
Third-party logistics provider (3PL)
Here, I will investigate whether the company should use third-party logistics provider for its initial warehousing and distribution.
Part IV: Inventory Management
Inventory functions for intermediate and final products
I will examine inventory roles for final and middle products. Moreover, I will examine devices that should be employed during product reception and then effectively stored before delivery to the end consumer. Besides, systems including “Pick to Light or Put to Light system” should be incorporated so that upon picking, the inventory is found quickly
Packaging techniques
I will consider the packaging techniques to be used during shipping is key. Some of the techniques are shock mount wrapping, Crates and Pallets, shrink wrap, vacuum packing, and preservation packing. Whereas Crates and Pallets operate as extra wrapping, ensuring product safety and keeping product off the container’s floor, shrink wrap is used in holding at least two items together to ease movement. Vacuum packaging technique seal the items. Preservation packaging ensures that the package is in pristine during shipping. The final technique, shock mount wrapping, is the safest and is used for fragile items, as it has built-in shock absorbers.
Conclusion: I will give a brief summary of what the entire paper entails as well as adding on some recommendations on the entire paper.
