PART A/B: Data Collection and Questions (50 points)

#1 Assay of Chemical Reactions

  1. Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) plus water results in an endergonic reaction.

  1. Is the free energy change positive or negative for endergonic reactions?

  1. What observation indicated that this reaction was endergonic reaction?

  1. Calcium chloride (CaCl2) plus water results in an exergonic reaction.

  1. Is the free energy change positive or negative for exergonic reactions?

  1. What observation indicated that the reaction was exergonic?

#2 Assay of Cellular Respiration

  1. Where is starch located in the corn seed? What is your evidence?

  1. Where is cellular respiration occurring in the corn seed? What is your evidence?

  1. Explain the basis for a positive tetrazolium assay in terms of oxidation/reduction reactions.

PART C: Scientific Writing – INTRODUCTION with REFERENCES (50 points)

Refer to the Template and Guidelines for Writing a Formal Lab Report. This section must be typed and attached to the Lab Results Page.

  1. Write the introduction section for the tetrazolium portion of the lab. The introduction defines the topic of the lab report. It includes background information and clearly explains what you are testing. The introduction also includes the significance of the topic and gaps in knowledge related to the experiment/research. This information can come from the lab handout, text-book, or other credible scientific sources.

Introduction for formal lab report should be a minimum of two paragraphs (note: this is less than the requirement for the formal report).

Information taken from other sources (including the lab handout) should be referenced using in-text references (Author, Year). Refer to referencing guidelines posted on Blackboard. The introduction must include a minimum of 2 references, one may be the lab handout.

  1. Create a bibliography (list of citations) for the two references used in the introduction using the correct format. Refer to referencing guidelines posted on Blackboard.
