Cultural Anthropology (ANTH 216.Winter 2017)

Due date: Monday March 20 @ 12noon in HSS RM 231A


Instructions: You must answer Section a), and any One other of the 2 questions in Section B. Each question should not be more than a 3 page- type-written (nor a few paragraphs, or one- page) essay. Please begin each essay on a separate page (12 pt font size, double spacing is recommended). Note: clarity of expression, the appropriate use of examples from the assigned book and concepts learned in class will be taken into account in awarding points. Make sure that each essay has introduction, body and conclusion. Provide page numbers of cited quotations from the ethnography. Late and electronically submitted papers will not be accepted.

Section A (You must answer this question 30 points))

  1. According to Charles Piot Kabre society may be seen to be living in the remote past, a society that is characterized by ritual practice and the exchange economy but it is also a society that is very much modern and was central to the construction of the present modern world system Do you agree or disagree with the author based on what we have read about Remotely Global?. Draw any 4 specific examples from the assigned book, to illustrate whichever position you take.

2.) Explain how the Kabre diaspora came to exist in Southern Togo and how it maintains ties with the homeland in the north.

  1. Explain the Kabre Notion of Ikpanture and show how it operates. Using specific examples from chapter 3 describe the conditions that necessitate the practice and the resulting relationship that are forged between the actors involved. What social implications (benefits/ negative are associated with this form of exchange?
