Normative Theories

Introduction

How we approach situations and solve problems is part of a learning process of human nature. Respect confidentiality in work places and addressing situation is relevant in a professional environment. In this particular situation a patient with schizophrenia is the problem to address.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects how individuals behaves, think and feels. The symptoms of this mental disorder begin between ages of 16 and 30, in rare cases children can be diagnostic with schizophrenia as well. Signs and symptoms of the disease depend of every person and change over the time.

Case study, A patient with schizophrenia

Working in a primary care medical office we have this patient with schizophrenia and has been prescribed with antipsychotic medication to control her condition. The situation with this particular patient is that happened to be my daughter teacher, but my fears is if this teacher can be a potential harm knowing that she is in a position of authority for the students.

Understanding the position that we have to respect patient confidentiality there are so many question coming to my mine.

  • How severe is her condition?

  • The doctor knowns her profession?

  • Does she is a potential harm for the students?

Schizophrenia is a severe mental condition, people with schizophrenia is prescribed with antipsychotic medication, this medication control her symptoms for them to live a better life style. Individuals with schizophrenia are not violent to other but they tend to harm themselves when is not treated.

Ethical position

In the process of making decision it is very important to understand ethical standards and what to do in regarding any situation presented.

In ethical standards, Principal D stated, the respect for the right of people privacy and confidentiality, which is very important because no matter what as professionals in any field for the benefit of each part we have to follow procedure to make sure we do not violet individuals right. 5.05 (b) Disclosure stated, The privacy of the patient documentation may be disclose with the appropriate consent of the patient in confidentiality(APA, 2017).

To resolve ethical issues the very first step is to consult the situation with a colleague and explain your concern to avoid ethical violations.

What features of the situation are relevant for making a moral decision

In this particular situation my first step will be to bring my concern to my superior and explain that this particular patient is my daughter teacher. Understanding the confidentiality of the situation I wont expect much of an explanation . As a mother I want my daughter to be in a safe environment at school and not to be worried of something to happen specially when it involved a person that have authority over her, but I can forgot the fact that we have ethical standards to follow.

In another hand if this teacher is responsible she will let the dean of the school know about her situation and the school psychology will give her follow up in conjunction with her specialist to keep her situation in control.

I believe that the moral decision in this case is to talk with my superior about the case and my concern for the seek of the teacher and the people around her, and mention the possibility to involve with the approved of the patient the school psychology if is necessarily which it could be an extra resource to address her disease and ensure that everything is going to be fine for all parts.

Deontologist Immanuel Kant recommendations

Morality is a matter of doing thing according in with each individuals believed. It also depend of what you thing is a good thing to do as well. Individuals has the obligation to recognized between good and bad and make decision base on what they believe is going to be beneficial or right versus wrong and bad.

The recommendations from Kant is to always ensure that your actions are always going to be according your believed and recognized right from wrong.

John Stuart Mill recommendation

Mill’s recommendations are basically that depend of your actions it will be the consequences, which is mean in my personal opinion that each individual need to be very careful and think before act, always ensure to make the right decision because depend of their decision are the consequences to come.

How do you justify your own decision about what to do

My own decision is base on what I believe is the right thing to do for the benefit of all parts. The fact that I decide to talk to my superior about my concern make me believe that I make a right decision. I follow the ethic code not approaching the situation my self instead I reach the professional to take care of the case always thinking about the right that protects the patients.

Conclusion

It is very important to respect the confidentiality of individuals, reach to colleagues or superior to approach your concern and address any situation properly. Is crucial to think about consequences of our actions when we don't think clearly, most important learn how to make the right decision always being aware and deferentiating what is right from wrong.
