You will need to discuss the infectious processes and acute inflammatory responses in regards to the condition as well as any potential chronic inflammation and wound healing sequelae that may result from the condition. This is an academic essay which needs to be referenced according to the THINK Referencing Guidelines. A minimum of five academic referen ces is required, with at least one being a peer reviewed journa l article. See additional information and marking guide following for detailed information. Assessment 3 Weight: 50% Due date: End of trimester exam period Length: 2 hours + 10 minutes reading time Topic: Theory Exam (m ay include: short and long answer, case studies, multi ple choice, fill in the blank, diagrams, labe ling and matching ) 2 Assessment 2: ESSAY The essay must discuss the clinical symptoms and pathogenesis of the condition in the context of the information provided in the case study (see case below details) . It must also describe in some detail the following processes relating to the condition :  the infection process  the acute inflammatory process  the process of wound healing  the potential chronic inflammation and wound healing seq uelae of the disease Essay requirements:  W ord count must be with in 1500 words +/ - 10%. Word count over 1650 words will not be read or assessed. Word count does not include in -text referencing, reference list, cover sheet or titles.  Referencing must be according to the THINK Referencing Guidelines.  A minimum of five academic references is required, with at least one being a peer reviewed journal article. A maximum of ten references is allowed. Referen ces can include journals, books and websites.  The essay should be submitted i n a Word document format through Blackboard.  The essay should be presented using Times New Roman or Arial font, size 12 and double spaced. Essay Guidelines:  It is highly recommended to submit a Turnitin report with the completed essay to demonstrate the level of originality.  It is the student’s responsibility to ensure the assignment is correctly uploaded on Blackboard.  The library runs academic w riting workshop s if you require further guidance or support. Students should also refer to the Marking Rubric below. 3 Case Scenario : perforated appendicitis A 28 year old male presented to the emergency room with a 24 -hour history of right flank pain and fever of 38.8°C. The patient reported feeling fine the day before and noted that the onset of the pain was gradual and was currently only moderate in severity. He also reported watery bowel movements for the past 48 hours, occurring five to six times a day. Further discussions revealed that he had not had any previous similar episodes, nor recently travel outside of Australia, and also reported that no other family members or friends were currently ill. He otherwise felt well and had a normal appetite. He didn’t have any nausea or vomiting. He did admit to urinating more often in the past 3 days but denied nocturia or dysuria. On physical examination, the patient appeared to be a healthy young male in apparent mild distress. Examination Findings Normal Range Temperature 38.7 °C 37 °C Heart rate 118 beats per minute 60 -100 beats per minute Respiratory rate 14 breaths per minute 12 -16 breaths per minute His heart and lung examination were normal. He only had mild tenderness deep in the right lower abdominal quadrant and iliac fossa. He had moderate C VA tenderness on the right side and a strong positive psoas sign on the right. All these signs are indicative of appendicitis. He was given intravenous fluids and broad spectrum antibiotics. At laparotomy, on exploration, a phlegmonous mass was noted. With some difficulty , the appendix wa s located and removed and the base of the appendix oversewn. A small amount of purulent fluid was present and drains were placed in the area. The fascia was closed and the skin left open to heal by secondary intention. He was continued on intravenous antib iotics for five days.
